Bird of the Day, theme 'Black&Red'

natureOct 3, 2026771,842

Bird of the Day is running with the theme Black&Red, with an alternative prompt LongBeak for birds with long bills. The gallery shows color studies and field photos of birds that meet those prompts, from closeups of red and black plumage to marsh and shore scenes featuring long‑billed waders. Look for a Red‑winged Blackbird in cattails, a Pileated Woodpecker showing bold black and red markings, and a Marbled Godwit in a Saskatchewan marsh under the LongBeak alternative.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Black&Red as #BirdOfTheDay theme; any bird with black and red in its plumage Alternative is #LongBeaks, birds with long beaks I’ll go alternative with a Common Snipe in long grass on a sunny day #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat

A Common Snipe standing in long grass in the bright sunshine. The bird is left of centre of frame and in side profile; looking right so that its right side is visible. It is a sticky wader with a long, straight bill (the end of which is hidden behind vegetation). It has mottled brown, black and straw-yellow plumage with light stripes across the head and back. Its cryptic plumage make for great camouflage. The underbelly is white with dark streaks and it has greyish legs. The bird is standing behind some large iris stalks, which obscure the tail and end of the beak. The background is a mass of mostly bright green vegetation

My spotty boy. #BirdOfTheDay #eck 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray head and a long dark gray beak, red cheek patches, a red spot on the back of its head, a large black bar across its chest, black and red tail feathers, and black polka dots all over its belly. It is perched on a thin bare tree branch with its head turned over its shoulder to the left of frame, its belly toward the camera, and pale blue sky behind it.

Lovely shot, and gave me two things I hadn't noticed with a Northern Flicker before - the forked tail, and the two red shaft feathers under the tail.

#BirdOfTheDay theme via @robcrank68.bsky.social #Black&Red Bearded Barbet #BirdPhotography #SmallBirdSaturday #Birds #Nature #Birding #birdwatching #ECK

The bird is perched diagonally on a smooth, tan tree branch, facing toward the right. Its distinct features include: It has a glossy black crown, back, wings, and long tail. A prominent patch of bright white feathers contrasts sharply on its upper back. The throat and cheeks are a vivid, fiery red. It has a featherless, bright yellow eye ring surrounding a pale, bulging eye. It possesses a thick, heavy, curved yellow beak. True to its name, a dense cluster of stiff, black hair-like bristles projects forward from around the base of its lower chin and bill. The background consists of several out-of-focus, intersecting tan branches and a soft, blurred green backdrop, creating a shallow depth of field that highlights the intricate details of the bird's feathers

Since I live near a cattail marsh and they tend to pose nicely, I have a silly quantity of photos of Red-winged Blackbirds. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This one is from April. #BirdOfTheDay #Black&Red #Birds #ECK

A male Red-winged Blackbird perched at the top of a somewhat scruffy cattail head. It's in profile facing right and singing or screeching with its beak wide open. Its epaulette is red with a little yellow at the bottom. The background is spring green with some soft focus linear tan cattails in the right lower half.

Male Red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) on a dried grass stalk CREW pen flint strand lake trails Bonita Springs, Florida 7-21-26 Alan’s #BirdOfTheDay is #Black&Red. Alt is #LongBeak. #birds #ECK #birding #florida #nature #art #passeriformes #threewordgenre #colorADay #greenSat

A male red-winged blackbird is perched facing its left on a slender, angled stalk of dried brown wild grass. He has sleek, glossy black plumage across his entire body, with his beak open wide in a vocal call. His tail feathers are flared slightly downward for balance, and a hint of a light white or pale patch is visible along his upper wing shoulder. The bird rises above a dense cluster of vertical, feathery brown grass seed heads, all set against a soft, bright green and cream-colored background bokeh.
