Bird of the Day, theme 'Blue Skies'

natureOct 5, 20261293,773

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme and today’s prompt is #BlueSkies, asking contributors to post any bird set against a clear blue sky with an alternate #BadWeather option. Submissions run from shorebirds to raptors, with flight shots, perched profiles, and formation flying dominating the gallery. Standout examples include a Peregrine Falcon in flight, puffins flying in formation off the Farnes, and an American White Pelican formation over Saskatchewan. Other notable entries show a juvenile red-tailed hawk, a Eurasian griffon vulture using its huge wingspan, and several Goldfinches perched high against bright blue backgrounds.

It has a dark head with a hooked beak, whitish cheeks and throat and a prominent malar stripe (or moustache) running down the side of its face. Its underbelly is creamy white and covered in black steaks/dots. The outer fatehrsnon the wings are black and the yellow legs are tucked in under its tail.

A Eurasian griffon vulture makes use of its 8+ foot wingspan over the Spanish Pyrenees. #BirdOfTheDay #BlueSkies 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a Eurasian griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) soaring against a blue sky, seen from below and angled diagonally across the frame as it moves toward the right in golden-hued sunlight. It is a very large, brown old world vulture with a heavy, hooked, dark gray beak. Its broad wings are fully spread, with long, finger-like, dark flight feathers at the tips and tawny wing coverts. Its pale grayish-brown head and fluffy ruff are turned toward the camera, and its dark tail feathers are fanned out behind it.

Wow, that's a dramatic shot. And an amazing level of detail on an in-flight shot.

Birdfolio2

Tack sharp right out to every splayed wingtip. Griffons even have a spy record: in 2016 one brought from Spain to Israel flew into Lebanon, where villagers saw its GPS tag and held it as a suspected Israeli spy until UN peacekeepers got it home. Gould made it plate 1 of The Birds of Europe.

Per AB @atlanticbirding.bsky.social, Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BlueSkies, any bird against a blue sky. Not sure if this common raven, perched on a tree limb against a blue sky meets the criteria or not! 🤔🐦‍⬛ #birds #31DaysofHalloween #BOTD #commonraven #photography

Atlantic Birding’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #BlueSkies; any bird against a blue sky Alt. is #BadWeather; any bird in inclement conditions A singing Sardinian Warbler photographed at Lagos in the Algarve is my choice for today’s theme.

A Sardinian Warbler is singing as it faces left. It is perching on the branch of a plant and has a light blue sky behind it.

It has a red eye ring, black head, brown wings and tail, white throat and breast, and light coloured underparts.
