Bird of the Day, theme 'Green'

natureOct 10, 20261113,023

Bird of the Day is a daily community prompt with today’s theme Green, plus an alternate theme Geese. The gallery features birds shown against green backgrounds and species with green plumage, plus several submissions that pick the Geese alternative. Look for a Song Thrush singing against a green backdrop, a flock of Snow Geese taking flight during autumn migration, and close-ups of green-plumaged subjects such as a Greenfinch, a Green woodpecker, and a Wood Duck with a green head resting in aquatic plants.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Green as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any birds or backgrounds that have green in them Alternative is #Geese, any Goose/Geese will do - A Song Thrush singing against a green background #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat

A Song Thrush perched on top of a dead Elder tree in song. The bird is slightly left of centre of the shot, in side profile facing right so that’s its right side is visible. The birds head is slightly raised and its beak is slightly open. The beak is dark with yellow around the ‘lips’ and lower bill. Its face is brown with flecks of creamy white and black throughout. The upper body is a warm brown with darker colouring at the ends of the wing and tail. Its chest is creamy white, turning to white around the legs, and heavily marked with dark, arrow-shaped spots. The legs are a pale, pinkish colour. The branch it is on comes up from the bottom, slightly left of centre. It branches out into five stubby branches at the top. It is dead and bare of bark with a clump of moss on one branch. The background is a uniform out of focus green.

Bitterns are well camouflaged, often shy and difficult to spot. For the #birdoftheday theme of #green #birds #heron #bittern #protectnature #EastCoastKin

A bittern clings to vegetation as it reaches down toward the water. The birdnis vertical in line with the plants that surround it. It blends in almost perfectly

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Green, any birds or backgrounds that have Green in them set by @helenbennett.bsky.social - early arrivals for the season but managed to capture Short -Eared Owls this week at Aust Warth salt marshes 🦉😍😍🪶🦉 #ukbirding #ECK

The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird of prey about the size of a crow, measuring roughly 34 to 42 cm (13 to 17 inches) long with a wide wingspan of about a meter (90 to 105 cm). Key Physical Features • Eyes and Face: They have striking, bright yellow eyes wrapped in dark, dramatic black rings that look like heavy eyeliner or dark goggles. Their face is rounded and pale. • Head and "Ears": They have a rounded, fluffy head with tiny, nearly invisible feather tufts on top (their namesake "short ears") that usually lie flat and cannot actually be seen easily. • Body and Plumage: Their top feathers are a mottled mix of warm brown, buff, and yellowish-tan, which helps them blend right into dry grass and moorland. Their underparts are paler with fine brown streaks. • Wings in Flight: Their wings are long and broad. When they fly low over open fields, their erratic, buoyant movement looks a bit like a giant, graceful moth or butterfly. Behavior and Lifestyle • Daytime Hunters: Unlike many owls that hide at night, short-eared owls often hunt during the daytime, dawn, and dusk. • Where They Live: They prefer wide-open, treeless spaces like moorlands, rough coastal grasslands, marshes, and sand dunes. • On the Ground: Instead of living in trees or high branches, they build their nests and rest directly on the ground hidden in tall grass. • Sound and Movement: They glide silently just a few feet above the ground listening for small field voles and mice, occasionally making soft hoots or rapid wing-clapping sounds during courtship.

You can just see the hints of iridescent #Green in this starling's plumage for both today's #BirdOfTheDay and #SmallBirdSaturday.

A starling perches in a tangle of dense bush full of thin brown branches and narrow green, waxy leaves. Some of the blurred leaves partially obscure the starling's lower third, including his legs. The starling faces to the right, appearing in profile, with his blade-like beak angled slightly downwards and one black eye seeming to regard the photographer with some degree of wariness. His feathers are fluffed and ruffled, giving him the appearance of having a tight mohawk. He has the starlings' distinctive glossy black plumage with white V-shaped tips. Where the sunlight hits the feathers, they shine with an iridescent green sheen.

@helenbennett.bsky.social has chosen #Green as today's #BirdOfTheDay alt theme. Sri Lanka is an incredible island for birds. This little-green bee-eater was seen quite often in open arid areas, fly catching from open perches. It is a resident breeder. #birds #srilanka #wildlife #eck #canon

Helen’s #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #Green, any birds or backgrounds that have Green in them. The Alt theme is #Geese, and Goose/Geese will do. Here’s a photo of a Siskin on our sunflower hearts feeder. A Goldfinch gives balance to the composition by leaning left on the other side of the feeder.

A Siskin looks to the right while eating seeds from a sunflower hearts feeder. It is mainly green and yellow in colour, with black and white wings and tail. A Goldfinch can be partly seen behind the feeder. It has a distinctive red, black and white head, with golden brown breast.

Happy Saturday 😊 Jackdaw plotting their next move.... #BirdOfTheDay #Green #Birds

A close-up photograph of a Western jackdaw perched on a thin, light-colored tree branch surrounded by green leaves. The bird is facing forward and leaning down, tilting its head toward the branch as if inspecting something below. It features dark grey and black plumage, a distinctive lighter grey nape on its neck, a sharp black beak, and a striking, pale silvery-white eye.
