Bird of the Day, theme 'Ducks & Geese In Flight'

natureOct 11, 20261414,176

Bird of the Day is running the theme #Ducks&GeeseInFlight, inviting photos and sightings of any ducks or geese in flight with an alternate theme #Pigeons&Doves. Submissions show migration and everyday moments, from large flocks arriving at dusk to single birds practicing takeoff and landing, mostly in natural light and documentary birdphotography style. Concrete examples in the gallery include Snow Geese flying to roost at dusk in Saskatchewan, a sequence of three Mallard taking off, and a Black-bellied Whistling Duck barely in flight at Fazenda Barranco Alto in Mato Grosso do Sul. The alternate thread features urban pigeons and doves such as mourning doves and turtle doves in parks and gardens, tagged #Pigeons&Doves for those who prefer those species.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Ducks&GeeseInFlight as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any ducks or geese in flight Alternative is #Pigeons&Doves, any Pigeon or Dove species - Three Mallard taking off - Brent Geese (B&W) landing at the coast #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #Stunday

Three male Mallard ducks taking off from the reeds at the side of a lake. All three birds are more or less centre of the shot and all are facing left so that’s their left sides are visible. The nearest (on the right) is about a foot off the water surface with its wings in front of it in a downward beat, its head is level with the ground. The second is a little lower and has its wings back behind it in an upward beat. The third still has its feet touching the water and its body elongated upward, its wings are behind it and high.
They have a yellow bill and a glossy, iridescent green head with a narrow white ring on the neck. The breast is chestnut brown, the body is grey; turning to white in the underbody. They have a distinctive purple-blue speculum on their wings, which is bordered by white. The feet are orange.
The foreground is short reeds with water visible in between and the droplets and splashes from the birds can be seen throughout the foreground, particularly under the birds and to the right.
The background is a mass of straw yellow grasses and reeds

This pigeon is keeping the city safe and the hooligans afraid. #BirdOfTheDay #Pigeons&Doves 🪶

Against a vibrant and clear blue sky, and perched atop a tall man-made water wall, a pigeon bravely looks out across the city, his keen amber-colored eyes searching for any signs of trouble. His head is turned to the left, but it will soon sweep to the other side, as crime cannot elude him for long. The wind ruffles his grey feathers though it will not deter him in his quest for peace. The sun highlights the violet iridescent sheen in the dark grey plumage at his throat, a reminder that goodness will always outshine the dark.

#BirdOfTheDay #eck A very interesting bird, really: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_dove 📷🌿🪶

A close-up photo of the head and neck of a rock dove (Columba livia) staring straight into the camera with its head tilted toward the left. It's the classic "city pigeon" with a slate-gray head and glossy dark neck show faint purple and teal iridescence. It has bright orange-red eyes with black pupils that are sharply in focus, staring at the viewer quizzically. A pale, bumpy white cere sits above the short dark gray bill. The background is blurred green grass.

That’s a fun shot. And yeah, I only recently learned most urban rock doves are feral.

#BirdofTheDay I’m going with the alt theme of #Pigeons&Doves. These two seem annoyed at being interrupted. #BirdsUK #PigeonSky.

This image shows two pigeons perched on a ledge. One pigeon is standing while the other is nestled down beside it. In the background, there are buildings and a slightly overcast sky.
The two birds are staring straight into the camera as if they are being interrupted. 🐦❤️

#Birds Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social says it's Alan H.'s #BirdOfTheDay today and his theme is #Ducks&GeeseInFlight. Here is a flock of Canada Geese moving into position to form the "V" shape.

The sky is a dusty shade of blue filled with the silhouettes of geese flying . The birds are moving into position, to form one side of the "V" formation they adopt when migrating.
