Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized after Israeli settlers attacked her and a group of Palestinians during the annual olive harvest in the occupied West Bank. Video and witness accounts show masked settlers, some armed with clubs, hurling stones, surrounding Levine, throwing her to the ground and repeatedly beating her while ripping away her bag and cameras; Levine said the assault lasted about 10 minutes. Witness Jasper Nathaniel said settlers prepared on a hilltop, then charged down as Israeli soldiers fired tear gas at Palestinians; Nathaniel and young Palestinian men helped reach Levine as settlers also fired from the back of a pickup truck. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said it treated a 63-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man beaten by settlers. Levine told CNN she suffered a broken rib, a broken vertebra and a severe finger injury that will require surgery; The Washington Post said she wore markings clearly identifying her as a journalist. The Washington Post called for a thorough investigation and some members of the U.S. Congress condemned the attack and urged inquiries into the assault on the veteran photojournalist.
