Rep. Ilhan Omar's lawyers say home search ignored judge's restrictions

Attorneys for Rep. Ilhan Omar say federal agents violated a judge’s court-ordered limits during a search of her home and are demanding immediate return of property seized in the raid. In a letter obtained by The Washington Post, Omar’s lawyers say agents did not provide her or counsel with a copy of the warrant before the search as the judge had required and that agents prevented her from contacting her lawyers for more than an hour at the start of the search. The lawyers also condemned a Justice Department inquiry into Omar’s immigration history, which the letter frames as part of the basis for the search. Omar’s legal team is asking the Justice Department to return the seized items and raising the warrant and counsel-access allegations as grounds for that demand.

“The letter states Omar and her lawyers weren’t given a copy of the warrant prior to the search, as had been required by the judge. It says she made numerous efforts to contact counsel at the start of the search, but the agents prevented her from doing so for more than an hour.”
