Kamloops elects Mike O'Reilly as mayor in B.C. municipal vote

politicsOct 18, 202621326

Mike O’Reilly defeated incumbent Reid Hamer-Jackson to become Kamloops’ next mayor. O’Reilly, who has served eight years on Kamloops city council, will take office following the municipal vote. His victory came as part of a broader night of challenger wins across British Columbia, where Pete Fry unseated Ken Sim in Vancouver and Dan Ashton beat an incumbent in Penticton. Preliminary results on the Lower Mainland also showed incumbents losing in the Township and City of Langley, reinforcing the provincewide anti-incumbent trend. O’Reilly’s win removes Hamer-Jackson from the mayoralty and adds to a string of leadership changes that will reshape several B.C. city councils.

Reid Hamer-Jackson will now be the ex-mayor of Kamloops as well as bankrupt and an idiot

Scanning coverage of the Metro Vancouver municipal election results coming in. One big frustration is the focus on mayors results, and almost no discussion of councillors results. In Canada, mayors have one vote on council, SO THE COUNCILLOR RESULTS MATTER! The exception is @jmcelroy.bsky.social.

No matter what else happens tonight, civil society in BC is the healthier for Kamloops' overwhelming rejection of soon-to-be-ex-Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson. #BCPoli

Apologies to all the excellent prospective Kamloops city councillors and school board trustees touched by the kiss of death that is my vote, once again. My ballot went 3 for 8 and 3 for 5. But the world’s worst mayor lost, so no matter what else happens, the city is better off tomorrow morning.
