DOJ charges two ex‑FBI officials over Hunter Biden laptop testimony

newsOct 24, 20264291

The Justice Department charged two former FBI employees, Bradley Benavides and Nikki Floris, with making false statements to Congress about the bureau's investigations into Hunter Biden and his laptop. Both held senior roles on the FBI's now defunct Foreign Influence Task Force; they turned themselves in and made an initial court appearance Friday in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors filed criminal complaints rather than seeking grand jury indictments, and Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui noted the defendants' "sparkling backgrounds" and said charging them for conduct that is "quite old" is unusual. U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro said the pair "allegedly lied to Congress" and accused one of claiming to have learned about the matter from Wikipedia despite evidence of their involvement. Floris's attorneys called her a "patriot" and said the DOJ's charges were false and politically timed on the eve of an election. Benavides and Floris are due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.
