Bird of the Day, theme 'Golden Sun'

Bird of the DayNov 2, 2026501,051

A Yellowhammer on Clunbury Hill carried the most literal reading, bathed in warm golden sun. Others found the glow in shore reflections, as a sanderling on wet sand, or embraced the alternate Femme Fatale prompt with a portrait of a female satin bowerbird in Canberra.

A winter plumage male Common Reed Bunting perched on a branch in am ash tree in the golden sunshine. The bird is slightly right of centre of the shot, facing the camera with its head turned slightly to the left so that its front and the left side of its face are visible. The bird has a brown head, with a white eyebrow streak and moustache, it has dark eyes and a short, sturdy beak. The hint of its summer black bib is visible on the chest, its flanks are whitish with brazen streaks, turning to shite in the underbelly. Its pale legs are visible; as is the tail, which is pale underneath and has a distinctive fork. The bird is perched on a thin branch that travels diagonally front he bottom right of the frame up towards the top left corner. A larger branch comes from the bottom left diagonally to the top centre, with a fork that goes to the top left. There are a number of smaller branches int he foreground, to the left and right, which end in large black buds. The golden sunshine is coming from the right and illuminating the bird and the branches in a warm light. The background is a mass of crossing branches, all lit up by the sunshine, against a clear blue sky

A photo of a California scrub-jay (Aphelocoma californica) perched on a weathered wooden surface in warm, low-angle light. It's a large songbird with a blue head and a white eyebrow stripe over its dark eye, a black bill, pale gray underside, along with blue wings and tail. Its dark legs end in scaly feet gripping the wood as it faces the camera with its head turned toward the left. The background is a soft blur of deep green with black horizontal stripes of a metal railing.
