Earth Day, 56th anniversary, marked worldwide tomorrow
On April 22, 2026, millions worldwide will mark the 56th Earth Day with local cleanups, rallies and virtual events, including the Virtual & Accessible Earth Day 2026 Rally at 8 PM ET featuring YouTuber and science communicator Dave Farina. Organizations are staging community restoration projects, a 24-hour "slow radio" broadcast by The Wetland Project starting at midnight, and promotions of the Earth Day children's picture book Wildspeak by Sangma Francis and Lexi Vangsnes. Activists warned that H.R. 1897, expected before the full House on April 22, would weaken the Endangered Species Act by reducing protections and making it easier for politics and industry to override scientific findings. Organizers plan to use Earth Day actions to press lawmakers to oppose H.R. 1897 and defend species protections.
