Plaintiffs vow Supreme Court appeal after Fifth Circuit upholds Ten Commandments law

cultureApr 22, 202618167

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, sitting en banc, ruled 9-8 that Texas may require posters of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms statewide. The court held the law does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Multifaith families represented by the ACLU said they will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the ruling, and the ACLU said the decision "tramples those rights" of families to choose religious instruction. A Supreme Court review would decide whether states nationwide can mandate religious texts or displays in public classrooms.
