Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced announced
Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a remake of the 2013 pirate-themed hit, will launch July 9, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Developed primarily by Ubisoft Singapore, Resynced rebuilds Black Flag with modern graphics, expanded story and missions, and an overhauled combat system. Ubisoft says Resynced is not an RPG and lead producer Justin Ng confirmed the final game will include combat blood while toning down some visual effects and audio cues shown in previews. The remake, first reported in 2023, signals Ubisoft's push to refresh high-profile entries and gives players a chance to revisit the Jackdaw-era story on current hardware.
Low-key, Assassin's Creed games have always been about who gets to be centered as heroes in historical fiction. Now that they're re-releasing these games, it's going to be telling how they re-approach the Black characters like Adelwale and Aveline. If they do at all!
The irony of this is black folks have always had to be heroic living in post-colonial conditions. We got lots of heroes! But, lol, the complications come when rendering what they had to be heroic against, because those systems of oppression from the past mutated and persisted into the present.
I sat right up and shouted during the stream yesterday when they explicitly disconnected Resynced from BF's DLC. Other than revisiting the open-world piracy (which I am excited about), replaying Freedom Cry was the most exciting thing about the idea of a BF remake.
I'm still sad Aveline's game was so short, it's my fave Assassin's Creed game.
