The East Coast Kin tag is gathering landscape, wildlife and travel photography from Yosemite National Park to Mt Yasur in Vanuatu and Clava Cairns in the Scottish Highlands. Featured images include bird shots of Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron and Glossy Ibis alongside a late-ray photograph of Mt Yasur’s ash plains as the volcano booms. Contributors often note gear and context, for example a Yosemite image shot with a Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujinon 18-55mm lens or a caption linking Clava Cairns to Outlander-inspired history. The track is surrounded by very tall trees and dense clusters of ferns. While many urban parks are the product of carefully planned landscape architecture, Stanley Park is largely natural forest that has grown and been maintained alongside the growth of downtown Vancouver. It’s a lovely thought Laurie but I’m aware that as I sit comfortably in my garden surrounded by birdsong and burgeoning flowers of many colours that there are millions out there who have nothing and are being starved, made homeless and left orphaned. Hard for them to find beauty in such a world.

I had been photographing the male when she suddenly flew in, landing within 30 feet of me-where this image was made. In this horizontal color photograph, the hawk perches with its prey on a substantial branch that angles from the upper right to the lower left of the frame. A smaller branch rises from it and exits the frame. The Cooper's hawk clutches the house finch in its right talon, the finch's eye barely open, as the hawk plucks feathers. The hawk is shown in left profile. A shadow from a nearby branch puts much of the scene in shade, while a shaft of sunlight catches its red eye, making it glow. The background is a soft blur of riparian forest—layered foliage in varying shades of green, and a faint hint of blue sky. A powerful reminder that nature is, at its core, about survival.
