Malachi shook his head, knowing Agapios would see. “Felt good to work.”

“Your hands are not meant for that work, Kyliares.”

“My hands are calloused and torn.” Another olive, another clink. “They can do any work now. I’m not sure luxury will ever suit me again.”

"Uh huh." I'm happy to let my worry melt into amusement. With the day I've had, Melody's disappearance seemed ominous, especially since I haven't followed my schedule in a way that would let me see her until now. A little cold seems trifling in comparison to the rest of the day, though. Not to minimize her illness.

"Should I make you a character?"

"Oh no, the centipedes... Yeah. Make me cool. I want to be a fighter this time."

"A bard, it is."

"Noooo, Lilia, take pity. I can barely talk, much less sing. Oh!" she exclaims at the distant sound of tapping. She gives a weak laugh. "Lilia, your brother's knocking on my window. You guys are such twins. I promise I will text you worrywarts next time I catch a cold."

"A grad student who miraculously hasn't developed an addiction to either caffeine or alcohol yet?"
"A king."
"I'm not --"
"Most would think to batten down in this castle," Thor said, not letting her finish. "To hide behind thick walls and wait for the danger to pass."
"That's a one-way ticket to a lot of people dying a slow, painful death," Morgan said flatly. "Mordred would starve us out before he gave up. Hell, he might even enjoy doing it."
A smile tugged at Thor's lips, warm and lightning bright, just like his eyes. "And that is why you did not even consider it. Fighting Mordred out on the field is more likely to lead to your death, yet you would rather face it than let the people suffer. You are a better king than you know, Morgan, Son of Arthur."
"Daughter," she corrected automatically. "And my dad's name was Taliesin."
Thor laughed, and something warm and gooey made itself at home in Morgan's stomach. "My words still hold truth, shield maiden. You are a king. If not by breeding, then by temperament."

“Why are we going to lunch already? It’s only 8:30 or so,” she asked a girl with red hair.

“8:31,” the girl corrected, “and lunch starts every day at 8:33.”

“That’s so early! I’m not even hungry yet.”

“Of course not,” the girl replied. “No one gets hungry until 8:38.”

Sophia tried to think of what that could possibly mean and then decided not to try. “I’m Sophia. What’s your name?”

The girl looked at her much more than she did before. “Did you go to a school before this one or a barn?”

That felt like a punch. Sophia wanted to cry but she kept herself from it. She said nothing else until she got to the cafeteria.
