Portugal marks 25 April Carnation Revolution, '25 de Abril sempre'

Portugal marked April 25 with nationwide commemorations of the 1974 Carnation Revolution that overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship. Ceremonies and public tributes highlighted Zeca Afonso's Grândola, Vila Morena and readings of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen to evoke the movement's cultural roots. Grassroots activists and speakers used slogans such as "25 de Abril sempre" and "Fascismo nunca mais" to call for vigilance, equality and concrete inclusion. The anniversary served as a reminder that the 1974 break from authoritarianism is both historical and a present-day call to defend democratic gains and expand social rights.
