Bird Of The Day, theme 'Long Necks' (alt: 'Species Paridae')

natureApr 26, 202614588

Today's Bird of the Day theme is 'Long Necks', with an alternate theme of 'Species Paridae' (the tit family). Contributors are sharing mostly photography that ranges from wetland rookery and shoreline wader scenes to close-up backyard feeder portraits. Standout entries include a great blue heron stretching and opening its beak in Colorado, an immature American white ibis at the CREW rookery trail in Bonita Springs, Florida, and a blue tit captured mid-takeoff at a garden feeder. Also in the gallery are tricolor herons and egrets in rookery group shots, sandhill cranes and brown pelicans on coasts, plus small tit family portraits like tufted titmouse and willow or marsh tits.

Violet-eyed, long grey necked, and legged, medium-sized bird with an off-white breast, and closed, dark wings, featuring a long, orange, curved bea, looking over its left shoulder at us in dappled sunlight, perched on a narrow bald cypress tree branch, against a bokeh green forest background.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron stretches its neck and opens its beak wide at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, the heron is shown from the upper body in right profile, its neck extended straight up into the air as it yawns and then shakes its head. Its beak is fully open, emphasizing the dramatic gesture, while the plumage along its body flares outward in soft, curled layers. The background is beautifully blurred, with greenery from trees filling the upper portion of the frame and warm earth tones from cattails along the opposite shoreline below. A faint line of chain-link fence passes through the middle of the frame, adding a subtle human-made element to the otherwise natural setting. The image captures a fleeting, almost intimate moment, transforming an everyday stretch into a graceful portrait of wild beauty.

A blue tit that has just taken flight from a branch, though it looks more like it’s jumping as its wings aren’t outstretched. We see the branch running diagonally from bottom right to mid left and out of focus foliage behind owing to a shallow depth of field.

A male Mute Swan with ruffled feathers stands in front of railings by a pond as it stretches its neck around to begin preening. The bird’s beak is orange coloured and there is a large black hump just above it that changes in size during breeding season. The Swan’s head and neck is slightly brown in contrast to the white plumage of the body. Camera: iPhone 15 Pro.

Two birds perched on either side of a tube-style birdfeeder filled with black-oil sunflower seeds. On the left, back to camera, is a Black-capped Chickadee with its gray back feathers and white-and-black head. On the right is a Tufted Titmouse in profile, feathers white and light gray, crest prominent. Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Lenox, MA, USA ƒ/6.3; 1/640 s; 400 mm; ISO 1600
