Gerry Conway, comics writer, dies at 73
Gerry Conway, the comic-book writer who co-created the Punisher, died at 73. During a career spanning Marvel and DC, Conway also helped create Ben Reilly the Spider-Man clone and wrote the landmark issue "The Night Gwen Stacy Died." He also wrote for television and helped introduce darker antiheroes, and his stories reshaped Spider-Man continuity and superhero storytelling for decades.
Gerry Conway has sadly passed away at the age of 73. He co-created the Punisher, Ben Reilly, Jackal, Man-Wolf and the first Ms. Marvel. He also wrote one of the most iconic comic book stories in history — “The Night Gwen Stacy Died”
Conway's "Night Gwen Stacy Died" fundamentally shifted how we process fictional death — it was one of the first times a superhero story forced readers to confront genuine loss without resurrection. The psychology of grieving fictional characters is genuinely fascinating.
Rest in panels, a massive part of marvels invention. 🦇
Aww man. One of the greats.
And my personal favourite under-appreciated and under-represented hero: Firestorm.
This hurts my nerdy heart, but I will forever love this man for everything he did not only for comics but to push back against the misuse of his intellectual works when cops tried to use Punisher to support their violent corrupt ways.
He wrote that in his 20’s?!
Gerry Conway has passed at 73. He leaves an incredible legacy. Co-creator of Punisher, Power Girl, Firestorm, Killer Croc, Jason Todd, Ms. Marvel. He also wrote a lot of tv including Law & Order. Best remembered for The Night Gwen Stacy Died? Probably? My condolences to his family and friends.

Lost another great icon of the medium.
Here's a fascinating analysis of what must have been one of Conway's horror-stories that he repurposed and sold to Baywatch Nights. What might have been a great House of Mystery entry, or maybe some 1970s TV drama, became youtu.be/jP6fbb3KtPg?...
Just read the Power Girl/Punisher crossover. R.I.P.
Few comic book writers have had as truly insane a resume as Gerry Conway. Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Legion, JLA, and on and on and on, not to mention co-creating Punisher, Jason Todd, Power Girl, Firestorm, and so many others. One of the greats. RIP Gerry Conway. nerdist.com/article/comi...
A fantastic talent. And, going off a few interactions on the other site years back, a genuinely nice person who enjoyed engaging with fans
Well today just lost all upside
Agree or disagree: Regardless of Conway's prior input, the restored Jason Todd/Red Hood is DC's answer to the Punisher -- and thus, possibly, a tribute to Conway.
Gerry Conway has died. Age 73. Cancer. Conway's stories and characters loom large in my personal comics history. I grew up reading, and loving, his work. He's best known for writing the gutwrenching Death of Gwen Stacey. As good as superdude comics get. Thanks, Gerry. Safe travels.
He had a long, terrific run on Daredevil, with Gene Colan and Tom Palmer art. It's sadly overshadowed by Frank Miller's DD a few years later. Great reading, great comics. Gerry was just 20 years old when he wrote these! Incredible.
The ONLY TIME Marvel acknowledged that physics exist, apparently.
RIP. That is such an amazing issue. From the Brooklyn/George Washington Bridge goof to the LSD overdose, it's such a gem.
One of the first comic books I ever bought. Quite bummed 12-year-old me stepped on it in the pigsty that was my bedroom, ripping the last 3-4 pages in half.
