East Coast Kin is a community photography tag spotlighting coastal scenes, birdlife, macro studies and landscapes from the East Coast and beyond. Today's gallery mixes wildlife action, moody seascapes and intimate plant and film studies in both color and monochrome. Standouts include a great blue heron catching a bluegill in icy water, a backlit Tree Swallow frozen at very high shutter speed, snowy egrets squabbling, a Variable Hawk taking off from Pebble Island, a foggy Hudson River dawn, a Pentax K1000 black-and-white close-up of a twisted trunk, and a long-exposure Orion Nebula astrophotograph. Use #EastCoastKin to browse the collection or add your own coastal, bird, flower, or landscape photos.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron catches a bluegill fish, in a pocket of open water surrounded by ice, during the last winter light at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph a great blue heron stands almost up to its body in a small opening in the frozen pond near the shore. It is a profile picture of the herons right side. Its head feathers are curled in the air as it wrestles with the fish. The last rays of sunshine are hitting the fish and front of the heron. The background is all frozen ice over the pond.

Photo of a Variable hawk just taken off from a wooden post. Its wings are outstretched, its legs are extended straightening out its feathers and making its surprisingly long legs look almost naked and end in yellow feet adorned with sharp talons. The out of focus background is the rough vegetation of Pebble Island leading back to the sea

2 Snowy Egrets battle in and above a very blue Atlantic Ocean in January., 2026 One hovers, head down, wings extended up in a broken V, while the other waits below, for the clash, head up, wings extended outward. Surrounding them on all sides is a particularly blue ocean on a cold, sunny January day.

Sunset over calm water, with the sun low on the horizon casting a golden reflection across the surface. In the foreground, the textured metal surface of the bridge, with raised rivets, diagonally crosses the lower half of the image. Dark silhouettes of trees line the far shore, and scattered clouds catch warm orange light against a blue sky.

Second outing for this photograph, though I've zoomed in this time! It's the most sparkly nature related image I have, and it's fitting... Seven years ago yesterday my best school mum friend passed away. Seventeen weeks from start to finish. We were a double act and total mischief. I like to think that she's on a sparkly cloud somewhere, looking at the moon (because it would be brighter where she is) with a glass of rose in hand. So, spend time with your friends, buy sparkly things, play hide and seek in your forties with your kids, grab opportunities make memories, and be chuffed to bits that you have wonderful people in your life for however long you have them 😊. Photograph taken of the sun rise through a raindrop-covered window. It looks like an abstract but zoom in and get looks like a world of tiny golden discs. Quite magical. Absolutely love the colour palette. Image has darkened corners, deep browns at the bottom, golds and coppers in the circular middle area, and a blue-grey and mauve in the top. Everything is in tiny blobs and mottles.

A photograph of the shoreline at Gruinard Beach in black and white, where the land gently slopes into the calm waters of Gruinard Bay. The long exposure softens the movement of the sea, making the water appear smooth and slightly mist-like as it washes over flat sand and scattered rocks. In the distance, low-lying islands sit close to the horizon, their shapes dark against the lighter tones of the water. Above, a heavy sky stretches across the scene, adding a sense of weight and stillness. The tones are muted, with soft greys dominating the image, giving everything a subdued and quiet feel. There are no people or movement, just the gradual meeting of land and sea. The overall impression is one of isolation and calm, with the open landscape of the Scottish Highlands feeling vast and undisturbed, shaped only by the steady rhythm of the tide.

I love the stick-giving ceremony between breeding pairs of herons and egrets. The females always appear so grateful for the sticks their husbands bring for nest
