European State of the Climate 2025 names Europe fastest-warming continent

scienceApr 29, 2026182,253

The European State of the Climate Report 2025, produced by the Copernicus Climate Change Service at ECMWF and the World Meteorological Organization, found Europe warmed at about twice the global average. The report documents record heatwaves from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, record wildfires, shrinking glaciers and declining snow cover, and states Greenland lost 139 billion tonnes of ICE. River flows were below average for 11 months across Europe, with 70 percent of rivers recording below-average annual flows. Those changes intensify risks to water supplies, agriculture, biodiversity and public health and increase pressure for faster EU climate law revisions and stronger adaptation planning.

Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent. We’ve seen record heatwaves from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, while glaciers have been shrinking and snow cover melting. The evidence is unequivocal: climate change is not a ‘future’ threat. It is our present reality. ⬇️

A circular map of Europe and the Arctic region showing the rate of warming from 1996 to 2025, measured in degrees Celsius per decade. Most of Europe is shaded in orange to deep red, indicating significant warming, especially in Eastern Europe and parts of Scandinavia. The Arctic region north of Scandinavia and Russia is the darkest red, showing the fastest warming. Greenland shows mixed colors, with some areas in light tones and patches of blue, indicating little warming or slight cooling. The North Atlantic west of Europe appears in pale colors and light blue, suggesting slower warming or localized cooling. A color bar at the bottom ranges from dark blue (cooling, about -1.5°C per decade) to dark red (warming, about +1.5°C per decade).

According to the latest European State of the Climate Report: 🌡️ In 2025, 95% of Europe saw above-average temperatures. 🏔️ Glaciers across Europe saw a net mass loss while snow cover was 31% below average 🌊 The annual sea surface temperature for the European region was the highest on record

And yet, despite all this: bsky.app/profile/poli...

So important not to back down on key initiatives like ETS 2 and Greendeal Given the 2nd fossil fuel energy crisis within 5 years …. we need an EU Commission with the courage to drive and promote forward looking energy policy

So dont downgrade the climate agreement !

I believe you are correct but the oil companies and the Republicans are still denying the science. cbwrong.blogspot.com/2026/04/viol...

Sounds bad. I wonder if there's anybody who could do something about it...?

SO STOP EXPANDING FOSSIL FUEL USE, Ursula!

Please alert Canada to their absolute failure to curb fossil fuel emissions and new development.

It absolutely is the present reality, and it will get worse. The ocean current that cools down Europe is dying. It isn't that "it might die" anymore. It is currently slowing down. People need to understand the enormity of that disaster while we can still stop it. Urgent isn't strong enough a word

pbasken.bsky.social2

Yes. Then stop calling it "climate change" and always use its actual name: "Massive governmental subsidization of the widespread use of private personal motor vehicles." Because that mode would not be freely chosen at this devastating scale if our governments were not overwhelmingly compelling it.

So what's the consensus now? Will we burn up or will we freeze to death due to the AMOC collapsing? Maybe a bit of both?

Kimmie 🇨🇦❤️🌈🌊🐕🦋 🇨🇦2

It has been for awhile, people just keep ignoring science 😒 🙄

Jim Higham2

If the AMOC fails at around the end of this century as scientists currently predict, Europe will then likely cool very rapidly. We definitely need net zero asap and the benefit of clean unpolluted air to reduce health problems resulting from fossil fuel pollution.

I keep thinking we need to replace the term 'Climate Change' with 'Uncontrollable and Irreversible Six-Foot Rise in Sea Levels Worldwide' or simply 'Permanent Biblical Floods'
