European State of the Climate 2025 names Europe fastest-warming continent

scienceApr 29, 202631266

The European State of the Climate 2025, produced by ECMWF and the WMO, finds Europe warmed at more than twice the global average, making it the fastest-warming continent. The report documents record heatwaves from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, widespread wildfires, shrinking glaciers and declining snow cover, and notes Greenland lost 139 billion tonnes of ICE. Hydrological stress hit the continent: river flows were below average for 11 months of the year, with 70 percent of rivers recording below-average annual flows. Those changes increase wildfire, drought and biodiversity risks and add urgency to faster emissions cuts, stronger adaptation measures and the EU's planned rewrite of its climate laws.
