Colombia president warns 'suicidal' capitalism at climate summit

Colombia President Gustavo Petro convened leaders from 57 countries at a climate summit and warned a 'suicidal' model of capitalism is driving war and the rise of fascism. Petro said fossil-fuel interests threaten humanity's survival unless nations pursue a rapid green energy transition and asked whether capitalism can adapt to a non-fossil model. He added that debt pressures are pushing many global south fossil-fuel producers to expand extraction to service loans. The summit framed climate action as inseparable from economic and geopolitical reform, a stance that could steer international climate policy toward confronting corporate power and debt-driven fossil expansion.
