Supreme Court limits Voting Rights Act in 6-3 ruling

newsApr 29, 2026676,075

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, narrowed how federal courts may enforce a key provision of the Voting Rights Act by raising the legal standard plaintiffs must meet to challenge voting rules. The conservative majority said courts should require stronger evidence before ordering remedies for contested voting practices, and the three liberal justices dissented. Voting rights groups say the ruling will make it harder to block discriminatory maps and restrictions that disproportionately affect minority voters. The decision shifts more power to state election officials and increases pressure on Congress to pass legislation restoring federal protections.

Been sitting with how many Black Civil rights leaders bled and died to ge the voting rights act only for it to be struck down by this white supremacist supreme court. This is from bloody Sunday which catalyzed passage of the VRA. It's hard not to shed tears at what we've lost.

John Lewis (foreground) is beaten by a state trooper in Selma, Alabama, on March 7, 1965. The future congressman suffered a fractured skull.

John Roberts, come on down. The KKK has an award they want to present you.

Crow. JAMES Crow. 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇬🇱7

The work of the bravest undone by the most despicable cowards..

This is a tragedy spear headed by John Roberts and Project 2025

That is THEE John Lewis in the foreground of this iconic photo. Democrats passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in the House several times, attempting to recodify key portions of the 1965 VRA, but Rcons know what side their bread is buttered on, and managed to kill it in the Senate every time.

The white supremacists will shed oceans of blood and murder hundreds of millions for the sake of perpetating their racial hierarchy We need to be just as if not more relentless if we are to build anything but their vile designs

The events of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965—where John Lewis and roughly 600 civil rights activists were brutally attacked by police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama—directly catalyzed the swift passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That law, considered the most effective

We need to expand the court to 13 justices and then pack it with leftists after impeaching Alito and prosecuting Thomas & Roberts.

This is a sad day for our country, and for those that died or were hurtvin Selma, so all had the right to vote!

Mere hours after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the VRA, Republicans across the nation — but particularly in the South — called on GOP legislatures to redraw congressional maps ahead of November’s midterm elections. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Big day for the Confederacy.

They are scared and I don't think even ultra gerrymandering will save them in November. People are pissed and fed up with their BS.

This ruling by the Extreme Court is a coup d'etat.

Fine. Redraw all the lines in all blue states, too, then. If we're gonna have Civil War 2, then let's have it.

Fight for right12

Then we MUST be even MORE PROACTIVE and forceful, hit the streets a talk to everyone you see, ask questions, their opinions, and encourage them to vote blue in order to fix what this regime has broken! And give us BACK the normality WITHOUT the insanity! AND keep harassing your legislators!!

heart-deb.bsky.social12

Vote in every election! Check your voter registration! VOTE BLUE!!!!!! VOTE EARLY! And take your ballot to a drop box! We can't trust the US postal service getting our ballots there on time. We got this people. NO ONE GETS TO SIT THIS ONE OUT!!

Democrats need to do the exact same thing!!

This is so gutting, I’m so disappointed.

Larry Colvin6

This will create a civil war.

Teri Wildt5

They knew and were ready. Blackburn called for TN legislators to reconvene just to redraw Memphis. Getting rid of Nashville’s representative was never enough.

B.Berger5

The worst SCOTUS (conservative wing) is apparently still fighting the Civil War and is happy to see black peoples votes stolen!

mwilk19.bsky.social4

Time for blue states to eliminate any and all Republican districts.

teesa33.bsky.social4

Do we really need a Supreme Court? They don’t work for the American people. Why make them rich?

honeybadgernocare.bsky.social4

Someone please take him and the rest of them out

Grant Elliott3

Redraw? Submit plans drafted prior to the decision.

Jake2

Well then Blue States need to step up! Tit for tat

Doctor Wylie2

Let them have their fun; because if that's all they need to keep putting Republicans in power despite their countless misdeeds, then honestly, America might be in bigger trouble than we think.

mlimonlv.bsky.social2

That pendulum swings both ways. Let’s not waste a moment and do our part.

My Threads feed is full of Black folks absolutely gutted and despairing over today’s Voting Rights Act ruling. I love Bluesky for so much, but today is one of those historical moments where it is stark that we really live in two different Americas.
