Ukrainian journalist, after 20 years in the US, says America is 'increasingly shocking'
Nataliya Gumenyuk wrote in The Guardian that after covering the United States for 20 years she finds America "increasingly shocking." Gumenyuk compares recent US developments to wartime Ukraine, highlighting renewed racist violence, deepening political polarization, and what she says is an erosion of democratic norms that journalists once helped normalize or hide. She asks "What will we tolerate now? Who will we be now?" to warn that these shifts reshape how the world, including Ukraine, perceives American democracy and reliability.
As a Ukrainian journalist, I've covered the US for 20 years. I find it increasingly shocking 🖊️ Nataliya Gumenyuk My country has been under occupation, dogged by corruption and war. Yet even I've been bewildered by the way the US seems to be fracturing www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...
Even the people responsible for deconstructing the usa from within are shocked . How easy it was over time and the lack of any serious effective opposition Well played oligarchs and foreign bad actors
It's very simple. The problem is conservatism.
A key factor — racism Their thinking is: “almost all Black Americans are poor, no way in hell is the state going to give THEM handouts!” “I’m rugged and special and get by — THOSE people are just looking for a free ride!”
It took 45 years of trickle down economics, deregulation, the death of the Glass-Steagall Act, the deification of wealth and ignorance over a living wage and knowledge, a lot of heavy lifting from the propaganda machine of Fox, white supremacy and misogyny, but, yeah,
I’ve been watching for years. It’s pure corruption. People like John Roberts doing the biddings of people like the Koch Brothers. They have a vision of government that empowers corporations and places profit and power over everything else.
Terrific read. Thank you for sharing
A dying empire. The world will be a better place for it.
What is happening in the US should not be surprising to anyone in close proximity to Russia. This is what happens when the oligarchs take all of the money and the propaganda machine works well.
