Jury convicts ex-Florida Rep. David Rivera of secretly lobbying for Venezuela

A federal jury on Friday convicted former Florida Republican congressman David Rivera of conspiracy and five other crimes for secretly lobbying U.S. officials on behalf of Venezuela. Prosecutors showed Rivera's Miami consulting firm accepted a $50 million contract from Venezuela's state-run oil company in 2017 to influence members of Congress and the White House, and jurors found him guilty of failing to register as a foreign agent and of money laundering. Rivera faces up to 10 years in prison on at least one count, with sentencing to be scheduled by the court. The conviction underscores risks of undisclosed foreign influence in Washington and could prompt tighter enforcement of lobbying transparency rules for former officials.
