Anne Hathaway tells trans fan, 'It takes zero courage to love you'
At a recent appearance Anne Hathaway told a trans fan named Ella, "It takes zero courage to love you." Ella said she named herself after Hathaway's 2004 film Ella Enchanted and thanked Hathaway for her courage as an ally. A visibly emotional Hathaway prefaced the line with "Ella, sweetie, I want to make something absolutely clear." The moment matters because a major actress used her Ella Enchanted connection to reassure a trans youth and model direct, vocal support.
A visibly emotional Anne Hathaway responding to a trans kid--who named herself Ella after Ella Enchanted, and thanked Hathaway for her courage as an ally--saying "Ella, sweetie, I want to make something absolutely clear: It takes zero courage to love you"......now I might cry too
shoutout to zelda williams (daughter of robin) who gave me this reply when i tagged her on twitter saying that she was one of the inspirations for my name!
I did cry. I am crying. What an absolutely perfect thing to say.
I just became a huge Anne Hathaway fan 🥰
I am in tears. I have both a niece and a nephew who are trans. It has been so hard to see these beautiful little souls go through so much and feel like we're going backward.
We may be able to forgive making The Devil Wears Prada 2 after this.
That's right. It's so very easy to love each other. We simply choose it.
Well dang im a mess now
Oh I absolutely cried. So important to say that way.
i’ve already cried three times about it!
I remember seeing this when it first happened (2018) and crying about it then!
Starting tearing up, Ella Enchanted is absolutely a comfort movie for me. Thank you queen 💖
well, i hadnt planned on crying right now, but here we are
Dammit I was hoping to make this my one no-crying day this week
yeah that absolutely made me cry
Not crying, but grinning and grateful. Brava, Anne Hathaway!
She's so badass. I have an adult gay child & an adult transgender child. We all love her.
In the build-up to when I actually self-accepted, I had a long series of very strange dreams where I was best friends with Anne Hathaway, and now I see she can feel our connection too. (This is lovely.)
INT. ANNE'S STUDY - MORNING (2018) ANNE HATHAWAY leans over her journal, writing frantically. ANNE (VO) I don't know who this person is, dream journal, but every night, I see her. Despite her outward appearance, I can feel her essential feminine energy. I cannot help but feel called by the universe.
Always felt the Internet hate for her was incredibly unfair and never made sense.
This is so wholesome! It's like your subconscious was preparing you for this wonderful self-acceptance journey. ✨
She’s a good egg. There’s nothing wrong with being earnest.
i’ve cried at “ella, it takes zero courage to love you” from anne hathaway no fewer than 4 times since i first saw it 15 minutes ago
i am deeply distraught that the world is teaching this child that it requires courage from ADULTS to love and respect her and i am so glad that anne said publicly that it requires no courage! she is right! courage to be an ally to marginalized children as an adult?? my god what losers adults can be.
I was shocked at how moving it felt to me then I realized it’s because it’s so rare to hear and is almost never expressed so clearly and succinctly. Trans kids and adults are not a challenge or a problem!
assumed I would not cry watching it because I read this first and already knew the best line but I was wrong
Ha! It can’t make you cry if you were already crying like me!
I honestly don't understand the Anne Hathaway hate? But there seems to be a lot of it?
i think some of it ties back to a tryhard vibe — but i think she just wears her heart on the outside. it’s who she is.
My wife is a hater and I asked her, and her reasoning is that she gives “theater kid vibes.” I said, I was a theater kid. She said, “exactly.” 🤣🤓
