Bird Of The Day, theme 'RockSolid'

natureMay 3, 20261466,017

Today's Bird Of The Day theme is RockSolid: submit birds perched on or standing by rocks; the alternate prompt is Mouthful for birds carrying food. The gallery is dominated by wildlife photography showing shorebirds and herons on rocky coasts, passerines and wagtails on stone walls, and owls and raptors settled on piled fieldstones. Standouts include a Meadow Pipit posed on a weathered stone wall, a Snowy Egret intent on fishing along a rock-strewn shore, and an American Crow finishing a crab amid riprap. Contributors also share vintage-lens portraits, action shots of birds in flight, and a few image-and-verse pairings.

A Meadow Pipit perches on a rough, lichen-speckled stone wall, its warm brown, finely streaked plumage blending with the earthy tones. It faces left in a calm, alert stance, with a softly blurred green background that isolates the bird and highlights the delicate detail of its feathers.

A song sparrow with a way cool punk hairdo appears in the upper third of the frame. The sparrow is in profile, so we have an excellent view of the beautiful feathers on its head, back, and breast. The wing and back are mostly orangish brown and black with hints of white; the breast is mostly white with brown streaks. The head shows a lovely reddish brown mohawk with an edgy white stripe down the center. To establish his street cred, the sparrow sits on a grey rock heavily mottled with lichen. The foreground at the bottom of the image is covered with blurry brown mulch with the occasional leaf. The background at the top of the image is almost completely black (it's the underside of a deck) except for a blurry leaf on the right and a grey blur of the ground on the left.

The photo captures two Eurasian magpies (Pica pica) in a rocky, natural habitat. Two magpies perched on large, light-colored boulders. One bird in the center is holding a small cat kibble in its black, slightly curved bill. The background consists of massive, weathered gray rocks partially covered in vibrant green moss and some yellow-green lichen. Sparse green trees and thin branches are visible in the soft-focus background.
