World Press Freedom Day 2026 spotlights global decline in press freedom
UNESCO marked World Press Freedom Day 2026 on May 3, declaring global press freedom has fallen to a 25-year low and awarding the Guillermo Cano Prize to the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate for reporting under violent repression. The International Press Institute released a documentary film, Defending the future of free media, to coincide with the day. The Press Freedom Index shows declines across multiple countries, including the United States dropping to its lowest-ever rank. The observance also highlighted immediate risks to reporters, noting at least 26 Ukrainian journalists remain in Russian captivity, some since 2016, underscoring threats to democracy and public accountability.
Urgent update: The United States just dropped to its lowest ranking ever in the press freedom index—64th out of 180 countries. This weekend we are celebrating World Press Freedom day and the alarm bells are ringing. Journalists are being silenced. Press is under attack. It is a five alarm fire.
Wow, 64th is pretty concerning for a country that prides itself on freedom. 📉
Who would've thunk the President of The United States militarizing the FCC on every journalist and media outlet that says a bad word about him might turn out to be a negative in the press freedom index?
