Robert F. Kennedy Jr. starts push to help Americans quit antidepressants

scienceMay 5, 2026576,936

On May 4, 2026 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a national initiative to expand programs that help Americans taper off and stop taking antidepressants. The campaign emphasizes structured tapering support, more patient education, and greater access to nonpharmacologic treatments such as psychotherapy, exercise, and diet changes. The effort matters because improper antidepressant discontinuation can trigger severe withdrawal symptoms, so expanding supervised tapering could change prescribing practices and patient safety for millions of U.S. antidepressant users.

This is such incredible bullshit. I am alive, thriving, and writing books on health policy/politics thanks to antidepressants. Antidepressants aren't for everyone, but they can be literal lifesavers. Attacking their prescribing & use is stigmatizing and dangerous. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/s...

Miranda Yaver666

Non-antidepressant things that would lessen depression, though (list not exhaustive): Trump's removal from office, RFK Jr.'s removal from power, Democratic landslide in November, Court expansion, restoration of a functional Voting Rights Act, holding Trump Admin officials & ICE agents accountable

Seth Trueger114

depression is a health problem, not a personal weakness

Lara92

Anti depressants are why I’m still alive

Azriel/Celosia75

Yes let’s listen to the fucking man who did coke off a toilet about anti depressants

Ralf W65

That godforsaken NYT headline! A completely neutral "help Americans quit " as if that's what Americans ON antidepressants want? And as if Kennedy has any medical or psych-med training? Even a fairly weak "Kennedy starts a controversial push..." would provide some needed context.

Rachel Parker52

JFC it's like we put L. Ron Hubbard in charge of our nation's health services. Narcissists don't like being told they need to fix themselves. See also: RFK Jr's history of mental health issues. How many times was he told he needed meds? Plenty, I'm guessing.

Dweb39

HE’S NOT A DOCTOR! My God, he needs to go.

Someone (deep, prolonged sigh) tell Jake Tapper38

Holy shit the framing. "Help quit"

Antifa Orpheus "Tempest" Wren 🏳️‍⚧️36

I've got PTSD and my antidepressants also hit my ADHD and the nerve pain in my left wrist. I will be in line to have "just a talk" with many other people, I'm sure, before he can have my meds

Ash B34

I had suicidal ideation from when I was 13 into my twenties, when I finally got onto antidepressants. Didn’t fix everything but not having constant thoughts of wanting to die was a huge upgrade to my life.

keep your electric eye on me31

Lithium saved my life. I do not exaggerate. People like Kennedy use their positions of power to inflict their own psychological problems (and lack of both empathy and intellect) on everyone else, and think of this as strength while describing anyone people's problems as weakness.

Goldy24

If Kennedy really wants to help people quit antidepressants he should resign.

Basil May22

The "war on opioids" has been devastating for people with chronic pain and many have been prescribed SSRIs and only SSRIs. I fear disabled folks will have yet another reduced resource.

Queen Bree of the Mount Things20

as a trans person, i'd like to take this opportunity to welcome ppl on antidepressants to the shitshow looks like you're next up

Jakey, MD20

I love it when a swollen red angry man tells me how to prescribe - this is the key to better health outcomes, when a raisin yells at doctors about teenagers’ libidos

Michael Tyznik19

It is bizarre that they treat the fact that people have worse mental health after stopping use of the drug that was helping their mental health as evidence that the drug is bad. It's evidence that the drug was helpful to their mental health. What are we doing here?

Jennifer Lee 🪁18

I don’t remember asking for the government’s help with this.

Don Bones 16

My only regret about antidepressants is not taking them sooner.

Destiny's Problem Child 🏳️‍🌈14

Cut Medicaid. Cut psychiatric medications. Cut Ryan White. Cut food assistance. Make life unbearable. Remove the treatments that help people cope. The people who can't survive that level of pressure disappear. The system carries less burden. The "weak" get eliminated. It's straight up eugenics.

liberation psychiatrist14

Heaven forbid we ask why about a fifth of Americans are experiencing depression or anxiety in a given year

Horn Slack11

The dude whose wife died by suicide wants to end antidepressants? How telling.

Violet Says Abolish ICE10

What’s next?! A push to get Americans off levothyroxine?? Insulin??

Kent Lind10

Also the alternatives such as mental health counseling and therapy are being SLASHED by this administration.

Charlie Purcell9

Cold dead hands and all that. He really wants to kill us

Jace9

If this dude fucks up my nerve pill prescription because he's scared of Depression as a concept, I'm gonna personally haunt his ass for eternity. (This seems pretty cute and dry that he's trying to kill people with mental disorders because of his eugenics bullshit)

TRuxMintinBox9

Actual headline should be “Kennedy wants to force people to stop taking potentially life saving medication”

WHY IS IMU SEXY!?9

If RFK resigns, I guarantee you several people’s need for antidepressants will be greatly decreased

Natty K9

Also, people like RFK Jr frame antidepressants as a “feel good drug” and I can’t state how untrue that is. Antidepressants do not give me a buzz or make me feel euphoric. It just allows me to stay alive by lessening the all enveloping agony of MDD.

Joanne Nelson8

“Help quit?” It’s a medication, not an addiction. Also, removing access to medication isn’t “helping” someone quit, it’s denying them medical care.

Kurt Shriner8

Next, he's going to convince Trump to sign an E.O. to help Americans End their Dependency on Water.

Erik7

From my cold, dead hands.

Bette V. Collins 🇺🇸📎🧷V for Victory6

Remember when Tom Cruise said Brooke Shields should take vitamins instead of antidepressants (he did later apologize) His religious organization is against the use of antidepressents geneticliteracyproject.org/2025/01/27/c...

Aaron Kimball6

Literally the only part about my antidepressant that I would change is the weight that I put on. I'm not in any way wanting to go back to the long nights of staring at the ceiling, hoping it fell down on me.

starlight18.bsky.social6

I need his help like I need tuberculosis.

Mother Bones6

"Help" Americans quit antidepressants? I know he means "force." Fuck that pestilent leather-headed germ-imbibing child-endangering moldy eldritch horror.

Tom P.5

What could possibly go wrong?

Flynn5

30% of people will experience clinical depression at some point in their lifetime. One in three women and one in five men. Telling people to get off their antidepressants is like telling diabetics that insulin is a crutch. It's insanity.

John McCarthy5

Invoking the 25th would do wonders for people's depression. Let's start there.

soundfile4

Good way to spike violent crime, kicking people off their psychiatric meds

Marjie Tennyson4

This man is killing people!

Enfinity Cast4

The stigma around mental health treatment is wild — we've created this narrative where struggling with brain chemistry is somehow a moral failing instead of, you know, just chemistry. The psychology of why we shame medical solutions for mental health but not physical health is fascinating.

Aberrant Eremite4

HELP?! Did they dare fucking say HELP?!

paulac61.bsky.social4

The inmate is running the asylum. Antidepressants have not only saved lives, they increase the quality of life for those suffering from severe depression. The side effect profile has improved tremendously. This is part of their purity test. Depressed people are not worh saving in their eyes

Thurston Nuggs IV4

Depression isn't having a bad day, and it's not a choice either. Antidepressants save lives, and Kennedy's depression-shaming will cost some. Kennedy has proven to be the single greatest threat to the physical and mental well-being of Americans.

Bohag4

RFK wants to remove antidepressants because he believes suicidal people should kill themselves and remove themselves from the gene pool.

Lori Barnett4

If there is ever a time we need drugs to help our stress, anxiety, and depression, it’s now. My youngest son takes anti-depression meds and he said it makes a huge difference in his life. Why should we be listening to a former heroine addict who has a brain worm, and swims in shit infested creeks?

Керрі Світ🇺🇦🇨🇦🇩🇰🇪🇺3

His wife who presumably committed suicide might be alive today if she had been on the appropriate antidepressants.

@Sister_Scene3

thank you for speaking out!!

Dr Paul Williams3

RFK Jr is a clear and present danger to the welfare of our nation & the world Why anyone has not yet begun the impeachment process is beyond me

Rubberband Girl3

It's because of Trump and his fucking minions that I've had to triple my Prozac dose in the last few years. They will take it from my cold, dead hands.

Turtle Duck Wizard3

Maybe RFK Jr would stop collecting dead animal parts if he went on something.

Tee is DEFINITELY still in her Villainess Era...3

So he wants people to stop SSRIs, but then talks about how a family member had suicidal ideation every day after they stopped? Make it make sense. FWIW, Brian zaps are real and they SUCK.

Lady Celestina, Princesa de Pastel3

I also use an antidepressant as a nerve calmer; they use many of the same receptors. I benefit from the main usage as well as offlabel usage.

Politics and Health 🗳️ 🩺3

The quote where he says he's an expert on antidepressants because he was addicted to heroin just grates on the nerves. Which are already pretty raw from everything else RFKJr has been doing to our health.

scarydairy15.bsky.social3

He ought to have to go through the torture of not having insurance. My friend got assistance with her mental health care, and then the state made some cuts. She had to quit her meds cold turkey. She was seriously sick for 2 weeks.

HomegrownVAGirl3

This is extremely dangerous and I know it personally, I went without it for a period of time and had a terrible manic episode

gm0rk.bsky.social3

It wouldn't surprise me if he eventually took this strategy to take away access to prescription eyeglasses. Because inhibiting the function of people who rely on them is the point. It's straight-up eugenics.

Katie Rogers3

As someone who has struggled with bouts of depression since my teens, antidepressants have been helpful to me. And your first sentence is correct, it is bullshit. (But unsurprising from him).

Sexy Husband 🗽3

Just more people dying because of his idiotic policies.

pro-tipz.bsky.social3

In 2026 a heroin addict is in charge of public medical safety and public Health for the entire US. This is not the future we deserved.

Drewthulu3

Can we please stop with the "medical advice" from the non-physician conspiracy theorist? It's all just so damned tiresome.

Steegs3

They are like insulin, essential medications.

Natty K3

I stayed on SSRIs through both of my pregnancies. This was in coordination between my psychiatrist, OB and Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians. Everyone easily agreed the risk of not taking them was significantly higher than continuing to take them. How many people are going to end up dead now?

KisseMjölk3

“Clinicians typically told patients that going off S.S.R.I.s was straightforward. But many patients report withdrawal symptoms, including ‘brain zaps,’ …” Hello, there. I've been on SSRIs since 1990. I was told the whole time to not go off them unless directed and tapered. So much bullshit.

bmaz3

But Kennedy is a one trick pony, this is all he's got.

The UnderCovered Podcast3

I almost forgot to take mine this morning, thanks for the accidental reminder xD

anndvm.bsky.social3

I’m so tired of this man who knows nothing about health being in a position of leadership. What an asshole

Liberty and Justice for All3

Where are mental health professionals? All should be putting out statements on it. But they also should be addressing the very big problem of antidepressants being over-prescribed, prescribed by unqualified (a GP for one), and not monitored properly. These meds cannot be taken away willy-nilly.

TubaPeter.com still sees a spark in you3

I use Lexapro to keep from LITERALLY ACTING OUT MY NIGHTMARES. RFK is such a sack of shit.

Monster Kitty3

They can try to rip my SSRI’s from my hands if it comes to it. I have ran out of them accidentally and it was hell. If I am forced to be off them I will probably literally yeet off a cliff.

Robin Lee Field3

I would have died long ago without the help of antidepressants and I’ll be damned if this idiot hurts more people because of his twisted views. Get this disturbed Kennedy out of our health and out of office along with the rest of trump and his criminals. His poor ex wife Mary.

asastryker.bsky.social3

"Americans start push to help Kennedy quit his job"

Toots3

Given the amount of damage this regime is inflicting on our country and the planet, we all should probably be on antidepressants.

Mary is FiftyShadesofWTF3

I will never understand why people listen to men like this. Same with trump. One is brain damaged from a decade or more of heroin use starting at 15 and the other is just plain ignorant. Alas they both think they are the brightest boys in the room.

Jay Turner3

Will it make life worse for a whole lot of people who don't fit the description of "cisgender, straight, white, neurotypical male"? Then put it on the agenda!

Rusty2183

Republicans are giving you the disease whilst removing a treatment

Chris Himsl3

Ketamine as used by Elon Musk is okay.😒 Adderall as used by Trump is highly recommended.😒 The hypocrisy of this administration knows no bounds

Ellin Stein2

He could quit and I'd be a lot less depressed right there!

Geddy Flea2

Since we’re talking about treating depression, a lot of Americans would be less depressed if all of the current administration resigned.

MaryM2

This man is so dangerous.

Peaopoe2

I hate this fucking guy. I’ve already quit my anti-depressant many times and just ended up suicidal again. Now I have a regimen that works for me. It’s not like I am uninformed about the medicines or my options, I’ve had this brain my whole life.

Laruna Softpaw2

Of course he compares them to himself taking heroin. As if they’re remotely the same thing. This article only talks about the withdrawal symptoms but that seems to be the only justification for all this.

MyMaLu2

They will use our health history against us rather than do anything helpful.

Nikki🥀💀🌱Zombie Queen👑💋🏳️‍⚧️2

Just his continued eugenics obsession...that's all this is, and he's allowed to continue this shit.

TRuxMintinBox2

That really sounds like they used AI for that nonsense but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s just what the Trump admin told them to write either.

gm0rk.bsky.social2

Conversely, I can function without antidepressants. I don't need them to live. But without them, my biochemistry renders my life is drabber and harder to enjoy. Why is that a goal for RFK?

srchrgrl.bsky.social2

Maybe if RFKJ had been on anti depressants instead of heroin and snorting cocaine off of toilet seats he’d understand….

Frank Hart2

What? With this administration in power, they need them more than ever.

The Best Words2

He’s not a doctor. This used to be practicing without a license.

Logan (Enid Fanboy)2

It's eugenics. If you are alive, you deserve to be alive because you are strong. If you are dead, you deserve to be dead because you were weak.

sam 20262

I'm someone who quite anti-depressants and have tackled things mostly through (admittedly, intense) therapy and I agree with you 100% The NYT's uncritical framing of this is, frankly, disgusting.

Eric Brignac (He/Him)2

He's the worst and most destructive human being in the Trump cabinet. At least until Hegsegth does or says something this afternoon to take the crown from him.

marv88-88.bsky.social2

So the whole point of the whole trump Administration was just to kill Americans faster. And people voted for it. 😂 And I bet they will vote for it again. 😂

Offbrand Ken From B*rbie2

Wrong headline, should read "Kennedy makes push to torment and kill Americans who rely on anti depressants"

Caution: Sarcasm on Board2

Here's a thought: the quickest way to reduce ever-growing depression in this country is to oust the madmen running this country. Prosecute them. Lock 'em up. Then follow up with a class action lawsuit for emotional distress, pain and suffering and financial damage Trump and his minions have caused.

bcalandra.bsky.social2

His second wife killed herself while medicated. I imagine MANY of his family members have been treated with antidepressants and did not get better. I believe he thinks they don't work. (He's wrong, they work for millions of people)

How about Kennedy push to get himself off of steroids and testosterone?

Antilles2

Saved two of my kids. F this goblin

Mt Pleasant 🇨🇦 🇩🇪2

well sure... cause why would you take your Doctor's word when you can get your mental health advice from a heroin addict

Lantern Girl2

Same. Talk therapy wasn't enough. I needed an antidepressant, too.

Erin Madson2

People who attack antidepressants don't understand them. The way my psychiatrist explained it was that in the brain of a person who is clinically depressed, serotonin has stopped dripping across synapses. Prozac (and others) get it started again. Plus, they don't know the hell of chronic depression.

Absolutely. They have saved the lives of millions. Some people cannot live without them. They are a miracle for those people.

More problems will be caused by taking people off for no reason! My wife tried to kill herself twice and was finally given antidepressants and was a different person! She has since gotten past needing them and has no problem, but sometimes they are needed!

I’m on TRT. I’ll be on it for the rest of my life because of my very low testosterone levels. Even my endocrinologist says there should be no reason why I’d go without, and yet, twice in the last 6 months I went a total of 12 weeks without. Why?Because the goddamned BCBS wants a pre-auth each refill

Saarcaustic Ben Zona4

What I’m saying is is that this is nothing new. The “health insurance” companies have been doing this for YEARS with all kinds of drugs, especially those having to do with transitioning or depression or even my case as I know I’m not the only one having these issues.
