Tennessee GOP unveils map splitting Memphis majority-Black district
Tennessee Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a proposed congressional map that slices Memphis and breaks up the state’s lone majority-Black district. The plan carves cohesive majority-Black neighborhoods into multiple districts as a swift response to last week’s Supreme Court ruling that narrowed protections of the Voting Rights Act. The Republican-controlled General Assembly is poised to approve the map quickly, which would eliminate Tennessee’s only reliably Democratic congressional seat and dilute Black voting strength in federal elections.
TENNESSEE IS NEXT Republicans are coming for the state’s only majority-Black district in Memphis, trying to redraw the map so it disappears. Rep. Justin J. Pearson is fighting back, standing up for his constituents and defending their right to have a voice. 📌Tennessee, 1 in 6 people are Black
Rise up Memphis!!! We see you. #HandsOffMemphis
Time to march against this Jim Crow Republican Regime!
We should never have a government without proper representation. cbwrong.blogspot.com/2026/05/we-d...
Why can’t all the Black people who voted for Trump now sue for election fraud? When he said “what have you got to lose” the answer was not nothing it was your representation in Congress.
Victory has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan.
Tennessee Republicans just unveiled their post-VRA congressional gerrymander. It would eliminate the one majority-Black and solidly Democratic district by splitting Memphis 3 ways to install a 9-0 Republican majority. It also splits Nashville several ways to protect scandal-tarred Rep. Andy Ogles
These states have redrawn congressional maps in 2026. The GOP targeted 13 Ds so far. Dems targeted 9 Rs. A court overturned Utah's GOP map. The median seat is now Trump+3.1—but GOP could target 3-7 VRA seats in AL, LA, MS, SC, & TN to shift it to Trump+4.3 or +5.5. He won nationally by only 1.5
Enough of the whining, we better figure out how to get people motivated to get out the vote. Indiana could be next, & yet barely 16% voter turnout yesterday. What's so hard to educate voters to see the personal stake this means to them
Republicans are chomping at the bit to eliminate black representation.
This must stop. The disenfranchise of voters is unconstitutional. We must vote every representative that votes for this corrupt gerrymandering out of office! This is what we fought the revolutionary war for! Taxation without representation. Representatives without representation.
As much as I hate gerrymandering, the Dem.must do the same and try to eliminate all red seats
What Western Tennessee looks like in the new GOP map of the state: It splits Shelby County (Memphis) into three to eliminate the majority-Black district that's currently anchored there.

The 9th will combine parts of the Memphis and Nashville metro areas that are 200 miles apart!
They're going to call this era "Deconstruction", or at least that's what they should call it.
People who don’t know how long TN is need to understand how insane it is to have one district stretch from Memphis, along the MS/AL border and all the way up to Nashville.
Gerrymandering destroys democracy. It should not be legal for any reason, in any situation. Not with a cat, not with a hat, not with a fox, not in a box. Should not be legal here or there, should not be legal … anywhere.
Partisanship aside, it's crazy for the same representative to be covering Franklin and and downtown Memphis. How are you advocating for your constituents?
