Venice Biennale faces protests after including Russia

artMay 7, 202632141

The Venice Biennale included Russia for the first time since the 2022 full-scale invasion, and protests have taken place at the exhibition's venues. Delegations from Germany, France, Spain, Poland and the Nordic states signed a joint declaration defending Ukrainian culture against Russia's destruction and looting of heritage. Ukrainian cinematographer Yuri Gruzinov visited the Russian pavilion carrying a commemorative book, while artists including Bonnie Devine showed works such as Land in War in the Arsenale that directly address conflict and cultural loss. The inclusion forces cultural institutions to weigh artistic openness against solidarity with Ukraine and raises urgent questions about protecting cultural heritage during wartime.
