Venice Biennale faces protests after including Russia
Russia is exhibiting at the 2026 Venice Biennale for the first time since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and protesters targeted both the Arsenale and Giardini pavilions. Delegations from Germany, France, Spain, Poland and the Nordic states signed a joint declaration defending Ukrainian culture against Russia's destruction and looting of heritage. Ukrainian cinematographer Yuri Gruzinov visited the Russian pavilion with a special book, and Israel's separate participation has also become a point of contention at the fair. The disputes force the Biennale to confront whether it can balance national representation, artistic exchange and protection of cultural heritage while war continues.
"Cancelled. The author was killed by russia." Ahead of the Biennale, activists presented the "Invisible Pavilion" in Venice dedicated to Ukrainian artists murdered by russia. Volodymyr Vakulenko will never present his tales for children โ he was tortured during the occupation of Kharkiv region.
Oh Olena! Just so tragic and heartbreaking what happened to him by these terrorists. May they rot in hell. What a wonderful thing for these activists to do in Vienna. We must never forget nor never forgive what these ugly terrorists have done to these Ukrainian artists and so many others. Jim๐๐๐บ๐ฆ
I wish to see this very good activism at each cultural/sport event. To remind the World Ukraininan voices are silenced, lives stolen, dreams murdered. russians are still invading Ukraine and trying to erase it. We won't let that happen. #StandWithUkraine
