A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near the Rat Islands in the Aleutian Islands on May 9 at 04:42 UTC, with the epicenter around 50.97N, 179.15E. Seismometers measured the main shock at about 50 kilometers depth, and a separate nearby magnitude 4.4 event was recorded at roughly 8 kilometers depth.
