A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near the Rat Islands in the Aleutian Islands on May 9 at 04:42 UTC, with the epicenter around 50.97N, 179.15E. Seismometers measured the main shock at about 50 kilometers depth, and a separate nearby magnitude 4.4 event was recorded at roughly 8 kilometers depth. Regional alerts were issued for the area, and the 50 km depth generally reduces surface shaking compared with very shallow quakes, but aftershocks remain likely in the seismically active Aleutian arc.
