Activists invoke 'Jim Crow' over recent redistricting and court rulings
Protesters and leaders say new state maps and recent court decisions are suppressing Black representation.
Rep. Justin Jones burning a Confederate flag during the special session on Tennessee redistricting Jones: “It’s a form of Jim Crow terror — this is about race. This is about power. This is about silencing communities that have historically been excluded”
Good for him! Symbols of and support for white supremacy has to get burnt out of the country’s political system.
Wish I could “like” this 100 times
More Reps like this young man!!!
It is amazing to me how much bigotry and hate six racist f**krs can generate. Justin Jones is the epitome of the best kind of good trouble and more of a man than any of those six SC dweebs.
MAGA = Modern Day KKK
Have a street demonstration Burning those Nazi racist flags of hate and stupidity
Please, white people, I beg you to please read “Mothers of Massive Resistance.” bookshop.org/p/books/moth...
I believe that forefathers of this nation gave you a playbook: No Taxation Without Representation. Maybe it’s time to take an example.
Confederates still sore about their loss 175 years later, just like the 2020 election losers will probably not shut up for 150 years
I burn confederate flags on sight, on principle. It’s nice to see a politician finally grow a spine and join in.
It goes to show exactly why we needed the “voters rights act 1965”! We live in a country in which we’re actually going backwards. I wonder how long it’ll be before women have to have men co-sign for credit as well as having bank accounts in our own names!
this would look good playing on a loop on one of the big Times Square screens
Funny how he reminds me of one of the Founding Fathers.
All Democrats need to be exactly like Tennessee Democrats right now!!!
I say burn down the whole fucking thing.
Images that belong on textbook covers forever
Hell yeah! Burn them all.
We are at this point because the Confederacy was never punished and snowflake pussy white men that are scared of anything not white, got thier fruit of the loom in a bunch because a black man was voted president. It's American racism at its finest. Disgusting.
Microcosm of the horror of this post-Callais moment: the Mississippi House plans to hold its redistricting session in the Old Capitol where they seceded & instituted Jim Crow. They'll meet there aiming to erase Bennie Thompson's district — the one majority-Black district in a state that's ~40% Black
Is any nationally prominent Democrat going to do a "have you no sense of decency" speech? I realize they'll laugh, do the vote and have a pizza party in whatever is their equivalent of the Rose Garden, but still might be good to do the speech anyway.
This enthusiastic rush by Republican-controlled legislatures to re-institute Jim Crow should remove all doubt in anybody’s mind that the Republican Party, at all levels of government, is an irredeemably racist party of and for white supremacists.
They’re not subtle. But then, these folks haven’t been trying to hide any of their bullshit for a long time-years and years. And we just haven’t done enough to stop them, so here we are.
Blue stop sending money to this State.
I hope these assholes dummymander themselves into oblivion.
We need to rid ourselves of the monstrous Confederacy once and for all.
As it stands, the MS special session relates to court districts, although that could change. There is some concern whether four safe GOP seats in MS, which has a higher % AA population than TN or AL.
Pissing off 40% of the electorate is always a solid political move. I’m sure it will work out fine for them.
I hope that the American people rise up in November and slap this shit down. It's 2026, the 21st Century, it's disgusting.
The New York Times is playing the Republicans’ theft of Black political power — the return of Jim Crow —primarily as a sporting event. “Bullish Republicans are back in the game,” writes NYT.
This is amoral, might-is-right journalism that avoids taking a stand on a matter of basic human decency. And it's killing us.
Soon they'll be profiling the Republican legistlators' bold fashion choices.
It’s all sports/gamesmanship to the establishment media, in that there are only winners and losers. Odds makers rejoice, for you can bet on the future of democracy from the comfort of your porcelain throne.
These privileged, wealthy white men who own and manage the NYT don’t really give a shit about the disenfranchisement of Black Americans.
It's the same story out of @nytimes.com @cnn.com and the rest of media They treat these things as a "horserace" to try and juice their ratings, *talking about the odds, instead of reporting on what the stakes are* It's the same game they played in the 2024 election It's how the media fails
NYT is a fascist rag. Pass it on.
Their tone and approach is aped by the rest of mainstream media. I call it "moral deadpan." bsky.app/profile/airb...
It really is staggering to see this kind of violation of human rights framed this way.
Yet another kick in the head to the Grey Lady when she’s already on life support. Shame on you, @nytimes.com
If the NYT were reporting facts the headline would be: The GOP openly cheats for power.
I cancelled my subscription. So should you
This “game” might backfire on Republicans in a historic way. We may very well see historic midterm turnout. A lot of pissed off people are priming the voter pump.
A country rotten to the core.
Stealing power, sanctioned by rogue GOP judges & a partisan SCOTUS!
If you still give these people money for "journalism" or whatever, I don't know what to tell you
Wait, the Democrats had confidence?
I've been curious to see how the GOP is selling neo-Jim Crow redistricting. And, wow: “Tennessee is a conservative state, and this map ensures that our congressional delegation reflects that...This is about allowing Tennessee to maximize its partisan advantage.” tennesseelookout.com/2026/05/07/t...
Honestly I think red state/blue state discourse has been poison. See trump talking about winning counties. States are not red or blue(sorry on my soapbox here) they're made up of all types of people with all types of politics -we need to start remembering that land doesn't vote and states are purple
“Tennessee is a Conservative State and we’ll make goddamn sure nobody else’s view are represented.”
