The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said one of 17 Americans being repatriated from a hantavirus-struck cruise ship tested PCR positive for Andes hantavirus while a second passenger has mild symptoms. Both suspected cases are traveling in the plane's biocontainment units and will be taken to a separate undisclosed location for additional testing and medical evaluation. Authorities will test the remaining repatriated passengers and trace close contacts to limit any potential spread. Andes hantavirus can transmit between people and causes severe respiratory disease with high mortality, so even mild positive results prompt immediate containment measures.
