Wes Streeting's Downing Street meeting with Keir Starmer lasted about 17 minutes
Wes Streeting's Downing Street meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer lasted about 17 minutes this morning. The encounter had been billed as a showdown in which Streeting would confront Starmer over open dissent within the party. It took place shortly before the State Opening, restricting opportunities for public briefings and immediate comment. The brief length highlights the depth of the rift and raises questions about Starmer's control of his party.
Interesting that Joe Morris, PPS Wes Streeting, urges Starmer to go. Are we to assume that Streeting wasn't aware? Streeting wants quick coronation to become PM. That won't do. Streeting is tainted and will be a stooge for big corporations. Cabinet meeting tomorrow would be interesting.
Starmer is dull and indecisive but Streeting is sinister and dangerous. He wants to privatise the NHS. Wide boy Wes would be a disaster.
Can we assume that these characters are the ones who having been leaking poison to the media ?
If Labour think that Streeting is the man to save them then they're showing even less self awareness than the Tories did when they put that responsibility on May, Johnson and Truss' shoulders
Streeting, a really poor option anyway, would become a puppet for Trump’s mate, Glasman & his grubby blue labour faction
The Labour party as a whole is a stooge for big corporations just like Conservatives and Reform are. We the people are not allowed lower taxes, food prices, electricity bills because those who fund them won't allow it. I trust none of them to protect us because they'd rather sell us and our data.
He’s also a slimy bastard
If Starmer goes then they have lost my vote for good. Pandering to the press, media and showing what treacherous, self serving twats they are.
Streeting and Mahmood are Starmer's biggest failure A bigot and a fascist, neither should be anywhere near the Labour party
I was wondering if they'd manage to deluded themselves that people are only cross with starmer.
Starmer given a lifeline after Streeting challenge fails to materialise Downing Street insiders suggest health secretary does not yet have the support for a leadership push www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
I've grown v disillusioned with Starmer but Mandelson's protege Streeting strikes me as a woeful continuity candidate from the right of the party who's been way too cosy with private healthcare bosses for starters.
Are you seriously suggesting Street Greebling is an upgrade on Keef? Hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.
I don’t really understand how a Labour leadership contest and change of UK Prime Minister at this precise moment in time, with the current international volatility created by POTUS can be considered wise. Surely we need consistency? Not a 6th PM in 8yrs.
From the frying pan into the fire.
Looks to me that Starmer will stay in power just long enough to get things stitched up for a Streeting handover. Trouble is that Streeting is also an slimy twunt who will be hated by voters too.
The issues highlighted in the thread below are rapidly dawning on some increasingly angry Labour MPs. (FWIW I think this threat is so voluble because it's empty: Labour would look a joke immediately couping a second leader.)
They'd also need the new leader they were trying to coup, and/or the NEC, to help them allow Burnham to stand for parliament to manage the obviously disastrous second challenge. Logistics matter!
The Tories are much better at this slimy, stab in the back stuff than Labour are. That should tell us something.
This is what’s best for the country: 1. Starmer agrees to act as caretaker PM until September. 2. Burnham given opportunity to fight a by-election 3. Candidates have a leadership contest held over the summer That’s it, no psychodrama and an orderly transition. Not hard is it?
Burnhamites can fuck off with this. He could sit this out, remain king across the water and do it properly after he's finished his term as mayor and avoid looking like a desperate arsehole.
fact some think Burnham is the answer is the biggest joke as well ... Wes can never win in members/unions, Andy not even a MP of course and not sure how much support he has when others step up
As an aside, & as noted by others, the irony of a first openly gay PM being loathed by vast swathes of the LGBTQ+ community for his stance on trans issues (me included) would be epic in scale. I don't think he could attend e.g. any Pride without, as a bare minimum, huge protest against his presence.
Wouldn't they need a lot of votes in the selectorate to switch?
Wes Streeting was in Number 10 for his meeting with Keir Starmer for 16 minutes. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...
I loathe Starmer, but my loathing for Streeting runs much deeper. I was hoping he was getting the sack, but having this ideological slimy transphobic weirdo on the back benches was probably too risky. He should be moved to the most distant and pointless cabinet post…
BBC breakfast said "that's more of an espresso than a latte" and I could not help myself but laugh.
you don't gotta hand it to starmer, but props to lasting 16 minutes in a conversation with streeting before telling him to fuck off
Laid across Starmers desk were multiple pictures of Streeting and Mandelson being besties together… Allegedly 😇😉
The Pantomime is still running I see.
Doesn't take long to call someone a bell end and yeet them out the door I guess.
