DHS watchdog audits Kristi Noem's warehouse detention program

The Department of Homeland Security inspector general opened an audit of Kristi Noem's $38 billion ICE warehouse-to-detention acquisition program, which converted commercial warehouses into detention space. DHS has paid at least $1 billion for nine warehouses intended to hold as many as 8,000 people, and the audit will review the department's acquisition practices and spending. Noem and her adviser Corey Lewandowski championed the initiative, but her successor canceled it on day one, and the audit could shape congressional oversight and future immigration detention contracting.
