That’s so true. Crowley the star maker wouldn’t turn into the cynic if not for what he’s been through. Aziraphale wouldn’t be so neurotic without what Heaven did to him. This is a glimpse of how they could have been, maybe should have been, if they’d been left in peace to love and be loved.

Okay now that I’ve had time to sit with it, I think I’ve found the words to get my feelings about the ending right. It’s not that the ending doesn’t make sense narratively, because it does. It absolutely does. And it is a happy ending.
Crowley has Aziraphale, he has his stars, he and everyone else has free will. He really does have everything he’s ever wanted. And Aziraphale is able to love him openly without fear. It really is the life that they deserve and it really is a happy and romantic ending.
