On May 15 Palestinians and supporters held rallies and memorials worldwide to mark the 78th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba, with events in Gaza, the West Bank, London and a mural unveiling in Hamburg. The Nakba refers to the mass expulsion and displacement of roughly 700,000 Palestinian Arabs during Israel’s creation in 1947 to 1949, and organizers used this anniversary to press for recognition, repatriation and humanitarian relief for refugees. London police sought to ban a Palestine rally while permitting a right-wing anti-Islam demonstration, drawing criticism from retired Metropolitan Police detective Nailah Sharif and renewing scrutiny of how authorities manage political assemblies.
