Michigan sues after Trump order keeps aging coal plant running

newsMay 15, 20267278

Michigan and environmental groups sued the U.S. Department of Energy after the Trump administration ordered the Nixon coal plant in Michigan to remain operational under a declared energy emergency. The federal order forced the aging plant to keep burning coal, releasing mercury and other pollutants and adding about $43 million in extra operating costs that will largely fall to ratepayers. Michigan says the order unlawfully strips state utility regulators of authority and blocked a planned retirement that would have cut emissions and saved customers money. The lawsuit asks a court to vacate the emergency order and restore state control over plant retirements.
