Michigan sues after Trump order keeps aging coal plant running

For several years, it has been cheaper to build new solar and wind capacity than just to maintain a coal plant — even if the coal was free. But gas plants were twice as efficient and much cheaper to operate. Now solar and wind, complete with battery storage, are cheaper than gas.

The Energy Department is overriding state commissions and utilities to keep this and other coal plants open. It's costing ratepayers $43 million (and counting) while spewing mercury, carbon dioxide, and other pollutants. An egregious example of federal overreach.
