WHO declares Bundibugyo Ebola a public health emergency

scienceMay 16, 202611915

The World Health Organization declared the Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, the Director-General said. Authorities report at least 87 deaths in eastern Ituri province in the DRC, describe constant burials, and warn of active community transmission as responders intensify screening, contact tracing, and safe burials. WHO said the event meets the International Health Regulations criteria for a PHEIC but does not meet the definition of a pandemic emergency, activating expanded international coordination, resource mobilization, and cross-border surveillance.
