Bird Of The Day, theme 'Eck'

natureMay 19, 2026242,240

Bird Of The Day is a weekly photo prompt; today's theme is Eck, with alternate prompts like #ScrollBack and #unloved. Posts focus on field bird photography and nearby nature, from a sandhill crane calling to a great blue heron caught in its flasher pose and Barny the black-headed gull, plus action shots of a great white egret with a fish and a recent gray catbird portrait. Contributors mix telephoto action, close-up portraits, black-and-white tree studies, macro bluebell shots, and shoreline landscapes showing rocky Colpoy's Bay stones and a big beech. Browse or join the challenge with #ECK, #ScrollBack, or #unloved.

Black and white image of the Oregon coast. The tide is out and tidepools are accessible. In the distance is the Oregon Coast Mountain Range.

A colour photo of a big beech tree, tall with two main stems quite high up its trunk, standing on a bank just above a wooded footpath (almost a holloway, but maybe not quite). Bushes, leaves and tree abound.

A sandhill crane calls out. Its head is tilted back and its nictitating membrane covers its eye.

A low-angle shot looking up through the canopy of a Japanese maple tree during spring. The leaves are a mix of bright red and deep orange. Sunbeams pierce directly through the centre of the leaves, creating a bright sunburst effect. The branches form a delicate, dark skeleton against a light sky, with winged maple seeds hanging down. In the background, dark green evergreen trees contrast with the fiery red foliage, creating a warm and peaceful spring atmosphere.

a chunk of a bird sat in our robinia. the branch is hefty (it needs to be) and runs horizontally across the bottom of the photo. Glossy black smooth feathers create a solid outline of this large bird set against soft white blossoms and lime green delicate foliage. Its beak is simply massive, like a block of stone chiselled into the shape of beak and stuck to the front of its face and its beady, shiny black eye glistens as it sits on look-out. They are quite jumpy birds and easily scared off, but blummin' persistent at the feeders, as they fly off, do a quick loop and return, just in case you don't notice them

From top left, clockwise: a male Mute Swan preens himself outside a pub with a sign that pays homage to the presence of the birds and their nest in a pond across the road; a haughty Jackdaw sits on my TV aerial atop the roof on a very blue sky day; a Collared Dove perched in the branches of my Paper Bark Japanese Maple tree seeming to be looking at me enquiringly; two Wood Pigeons in the Tulip border beneath a bird feeder in my front drive, having a lovers’ tiff.

This image shows a Blue tit perched on top of the red, orange and yellow flowers and green leaves of a Japanese pieris. The bird's body faces slightly to our left but it has turned its head to its left, showing off its light blue crown with a flash of blue just visible on the front of its left wing, tucked in tight at its side. Beneath its crown its brilliant white forehead and cheeks are split by its black eye strip, eye, short pointed bill and collar. Its thin black collar gives a crisp edge to its yellow breast which is white in the centre, with a black flash down the middle. This was taken recently in my Renfrewshire garden and I think this is one of the pair of Blue tits that is using our nest box after last year's House sparrows couldn't come up with the deposit for the rent this year! No sign of chicks yet although the adults are very busy, making regular runs to and from the box with nest materials and food, so there must be chicks there but they're very quiet.

This Great White Egret has just snagged a fish from the marsh water. The fish is visible in its beak, and water is dripping from the fish. The egret is still bent over from its lunge into the water with its wings spread to balance it.

A large brown bird is striding along a roadside near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. This is a Wild Turkey. Wild Turkeys usually travel in flocks, foraging on the ground in fields or forests. This bird was one of about half a dozen turkeys, which disappeared quickly into the woods.
