Bird Of The Day, theme 'Eck'

natureMay 21, 202619949

Bird Of The Day is a weekly image-sharing event; today's 'Eck' prompt is Grassland, with an alternate prompt of Red. Contributors are posting grassy-field portraits, low-angle meadow shots, and close-up nature images that highlight breeding plumage and concealment in vegetation. Standout entries include a male Ring-necked Pheasant poking its head from a meadow, a female Bobolink hunkered down in hay, and a Glossy Ibis in full breeding colors. Look for field-camera and phone photos plus macro insect work; tag your own entry with #BirdOfTheDay and #ECK to join.

A small European robin perches side-on on a slender, lichen-speckled branch, its orange-red face and breast standing out against soft grey-brown wings and a pale belly. The bird faces to the right with a calm, alert posture, its dark eye catching a little light and its fine beak pointing into the open space of the frame. A second branch cuts diagonally through the lower foreground, while the background is beautifully blurred in deep greens, giving the scene a quiet woodland feel and keeping all attention on the robin.

A close-up macro photograph captures a bumblebee poised delicately on the centre of a vivid purple daisy-like flower. The bee fills much of the frame and is shown side-on, creating a strong sense of intimacy and scale. Its body is densely furred, with rich bands of golden yellow and black across the thorax and abdomen, ending in a soft warm-orange tail that glows against the cooler tones around it. Fine individual hairs catch the light, giving the insect a velvety texture. The bee appears momentarily suspended between stillness and movement, with front legs lightly gripping the flower while the body is lifted as though preparing to move to the next bloom. One curved antenna arcs forward into the space ahead, and the glossy dark eye reflects a pinpoint of light. The wings sit mostly hidden against the body, allowing the texture and colour of the bee itself to dominate the scene. Beneath it, the flower’s petals radiate outward in saturated violet and magenta tones, with subtle gradients and faint texture visible across their surface. The dark central disc is densely packed with tiny clustered florets that create contrast against the luminous petals. Surrounding blooms dissolve into a dreamy blur in the background, creating layers of soft purple shapes and shallow depth of field that isolate the bee as the clear subject. The overall effect is immersive and almost painterly: a tiny pollinator rendered in crisp detail against a sea of blurred violet, capturing the fleeting pause of a bee at work among summer flowers.

A male Ring-necked Pheasant sticking its head and neck out of a grass meadow. The bird is in the centre right of the picture; its mottled brown back, white ring and blue on its neck and red wattle on its face are visible Its head is turned to the left as it looks behind at the camera. The sun is shining from the left of the frame and highlighting the bird and the grass The field is mostly green grass with black buds of ribwort plantain, yellow dandelions and daisies scattered throughout

Green sea anemones are seen open under the water at a tide pool. Above them on the rocks exposed to the air, dozens more are sealed up. An orange starfish is also on the rocks. Photo by Robert Emond.

A small round Robin redbreast sits on the metal perch of a green garden bird feeder as she contemplates her meal. The feeder is filled with sunflower hearts that can be seen through the clear plastic tube above. The device hangs from a black metal pole and stands in a garden border filled with greenery and many coloured flowers, most prominently a tall pink Foxglove just behind our bird. The green wood of a shed can be glimpsed through overhanging leaves of a tree. Another bird feeder hangs to the left of frame. Photograph taken of a stork-like bird on the C18th Chinoiserie, hand blocked, wallpaper in the Queen of Scots Room at Chatsworth House. It has long green legs, deep brown patterned wings, a pink-mushroom coloured body and a long green beak. It is looking over its shoulder at something out of frame. There are mountains and snow topped trees behind it. Snow also at its feet. No idea on the actual bird, so will leave that to the bird experts on here! Love Chinoiserie wallpaper and the birds on this one made me laugh. They'd been placed in positions as if they were interacting with each other - some looking confused, others naffed off, some oblivious. Makes me think that the artists had laughed at birds in their localities and added that humour to their work, all those years ago. The wallpaper was made about 1799 in Guangzhou, China, and was made for export. The wallpaper has been restored by experts as it had suffered from water damage and general ageing. More info about the conservation work can be found in the press release section of Chatsworth's website: www.chatsworth.org

A handsome buffy brown bird with a yellow breast is sitting in the middle of a hay meadow. This is a female Bobolink, photographed in late May at Heaven Hill near Lake Placid in upstate New York. Female Bobolinks arrive on this meadow in mid to late May, a week or so after the males.

A killdeer stands between a tuft of grass taller than it is and a patch of a leafy plant that may be crown vetch. The bird has brown wings, white underparts, a black and white striped neck and a white head with grey bands crossing near its beak and eye. The bird is in right profile with wings folded, and its head is tilted in an inquisitive manner.

A grey heron is looking for some food in a shallow basin that is part of the Citadel of Kopenhagen, the fortress which protected the harbor (and the little Mermaid which is very close). It was a rainy day and I think the heron was successful a little while later.
