A federal court just blocked Alabama from using a congressional map that judges previously found intentionally discriminated against Black voters and ordered the state to keep using the court-drawn map with two Black-opportunity districts for the 2026 elections.

A 3 judge panel ruled Alabama’s 2023 congressional map is discriminatory and blocked its use for the 2026 midterms, saying it flipped a blue-leaning seat red. Alabama is expected to appeal to SCOTUS. It is also noted the district court cited past SCOTUS rulings against the state’s position.

Our main story today comes out of Alabama, where just hours ago a federal court blocked the GOP’s attempt to redraw its congressional map for the November midterms. It is a defeat for the broader Republican push to gerrymander their way into keeping the House.
