Trump wants a gag order for every government worker

newsMay 28, 2026144,870

A Bulwark column says President Trump proposes requiring every federal employee to sign nondisclosure agreements that bar them from speaking about their work and impose criminal penalties for violations. The column argues those gag orders would operate as a loyalty oath to Trump and make potential witnesses afraid to report wrongdoing. Writers warn the policy would undercut whistleblower protections and congressional oversight, increasing incentives for corruption and abuse in government.

Yesterday, we post about the Trump administration’s plan to require all federal workers to sign nondisclosure agreements. The government is not a business. It exists to serve the public and the public has a right to know how it’s being run.

The same administration that claims to be the “most transparent in American history” is trying to silence the very people who keep it accountable and hide everything from the public.

NDA’s shouldn’t exist in Corporate America either.

Pugluver 🐾24

Someone needs to tell him that he works for us and that the federal workers work for us and that the government works for us state local and federal. This man has no idea how government works. He thinks he won the lottery and he owns America and he’s playing a game of risk trying to own the world !🤬

Tony Cowen11

All federal employees already signed documents stating they understand the rules re: information. This NDA crap is redundant bullshit designed to intimidate and insult. Oh and it plays to the base.

Phil aka Captain Ireland11

The only reason to require an NDA is to protect trade secrets or try to cover up illicit actions. Since the federal government has no trade secrets not already protected by law, we all know Cheetoh's reason for wanting NDAs.

Clare W.9

This is an illegal constraint placed on federal workers. It sounds like a mob boss move. Federal workers are usually serving the people long after a president has left the White House.

Congress & the USSC are enabling the Trump administration in erasing the concept of government for the people & “rebranding” the USA as a business with a billionaire CEO & board of directors who “make deals” & enrich themselves while selling off the nation’s “assets” faster than they can be saved.

marksmithresister.bsky.social8

NDA's aren't enforceable where criminal activity is involved. But it certainly shows that he knows what he's doing is wrong & needs to keep knowledge of his criminal activities from seeing light.

Jack6

Their motive for this is their desire to operate in secret.

deanna6

Let's all revist the error in EVER THINKING ANY BUSINESSMAN SHOULD BE ANYWHERE NEAR THE PRESIDENCY. He thinks this shit is a business, he has gotten rid of all of these programs offering social value BENEFITS leaving social DEFICITS filled with more sick &more poor simply bc he couldn't make any $$!

James Baum5

Completely agree. It’s part of Trump’s campaign to try to intimidate everyone in his administration from ever going public on anything!!

Sort of Damocles5

Three things required for a functioning democracy: a free press, transparency in government, and faith in elections. Notice a trend?

David Wright (it/them)5

Just so. If they're asking for NDAs, in the government that's not about protecting intellectual property. That's about concealing crimes. Handy tid-bit: You CANNOT be contractually obligated to break or disobey the law. By ANYBODY. Any such contract is void on it's face.

howdydo.bsky.social5

NDA’s regarding illegal activities are unenforceable. 😉

AMERICA WILL KNOW THIS SOON “It’s going to be a challenging year,” said Ricky Volpe, an agribusiness professor at who previously worked at the US Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. “Food is going to become less affordable, and consumers should be prepared for it.”

MsGnomer4

This is Mafia tactics. No legal foundation, but who ya gonna complain to when there are so many ways they can make your life uncomfortable, complicated, and expensive? Not everyone will be strong enough to refuse to comply in advance.

Last time I checked, security clearances stemmed the flow of classified information. Not a total seal, but you’ll never get that in a true democracy.

Millie, or Mills if we’re friends3

On its face it’s antithetical to a democratic govt If ppl can be punished for talking about the govt, (not security related where secrecy is obv needed) Then what are we even doing?

merlevans.bsky.social2

And the public is paying their wages. Not Trump

Glenn of the Hill People2

They don’t want us reporting waste, fraud, and abuse because that’s how the Republicans stay in power.

Lpeterp2

We the public demand transparency not secrecy from our own government.

Most non-disclosure agreements simply shouldn't exist. They cover for too much mischief.

Violet Fem2

Yeah we have Request for Info laws bc we the ppl own that data. The govt is to work in the ppl’s interest not the interests of a single entity or political party. Fuck the regime.

Trump is trying to slap NDAs on federal workers because apparently the “law and order” guy is terrified of government employees telling the truth. Nothing screams “innocent” like trying to gag the witnesses.

I don’t know how this is possible. Federal workers are paid by taxes from the public, and should then answer to the public, not to government officials. By virtue of tax-paid salaries, follows transparency. Trump as usual, trying to get away with illegal NDAs. These aren’t corporate employees.

TonyTrink7

Federal employees work FOR US, not him.

Handmaid6

NDAs cannot legally be used to hide illegal behavior. So there is that...

Ms.Carter6

Where NDA’s are necessary there is crime being committed.

Richard Saunders5

NDAs do not hold up when illegal acts are committed which is an everyday occurrence during the Trump regime.

pamballard3.bsky.social4

I thought that was illegal if you were a public employee. Now if you worked for the pedophile privately, yes, he could demand a NDA.

End MAGA4

NDA’s cannot stop whistleblowers, so they are useless. It is all an intimidation tactic of those who are too scared to lose their job or be sued. Really, patriots would ignore this and blow the whistle anyway.

propugnaculum.bsky.social3

Trump showed national secrets to his friends, but wants public employees to protect his secrets. Here’s the problem. Trump hires and fires but they are our employees not his. As president his secrets are ours not his. Any NDA signed by a public employee should be immediately laughed out of court.

Its Getting Clear3

Something tells me that might be illegal. I think there are federal laws that dictate employment policies for federal workers. Can he just do that willy-nilly? What about the whistleblower rules? Anyone have any legal understanding about this?

Explain to me how the convicted felon represents the Law and Order Party?

Every attempt is a felony conspiracy to deprive rights.

The Smartest Floridian3

That's fine, you can't NDA a crime. Those Agreements aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Neil B2

Let's be truthful, Trump, the Republican Party and the corporations which put him in power, care nothing about the US or its people. They are a gangster shakedown racket, nothing more.

kstrand.bsky.social2

I hear NDAs can not be enforced if they involve the cover-up of a crime. So I guess it would be done to frighten or inconvenience workers who don't know the law. Did Trump kill the federal workers' unions? They can challenge this kind of BS.

YvetteJR718☮️💙♋️ ♎️❌2

I think the whole thing is STUPID. Federal Workers (especially entry level) don’t make enough $ to have to sign NDA’s. Please. What a crock of CRAP. I worked nights for the IRS when my kids were little so I didn’t have to pay a babysitter. The Federal Government doesn’t pay well compared to private

deanna2

I read the other day they are putting his GOD messages & Truth Social as a REQUIREMENT on government phones. The horse left the barn LONG LONG AGO & is doing circles around all of us yellling YAHOO as it fuckin runs us all over. What the fuck are we even doing?

🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦 Garth Caron2

Part 2 - NDAs should be challenged in any way possible. I am not a “trade secret”! Protection of all employees from this type of coercion by those in power, who do not want their dirty laundry exposed in public. Time for accountability, and a clean clothesline! NDA Survivor

🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦 Garth Caron2

Part 1 - Non-Disclosure Agreement (Cover for Dirty Laundry) These documents are the easy way out for Companies and Governments to hide the “Truth.” They protect the people who need to be exposed for their actions. The individual who is harmed is the one that needs protection.

kcee14.bsky.social2

Those folks are employees of the government, not Donald Trump. How is this in any way legal? He clearly has no concept that he too is an employee. His delusion is killing the whole damn planet!
