A blue micromoon, the second full moon in May and a full moon near lunar apogee, reaches peak illumination at 8:45 a.m. UTC on May 31, 2026. At peak the moon sits about 356,598 km (221,579 miles) from Earth, so it will look slightly smaller and a bit dimmer than a typical full moon; binoculars or photography help reveal the subtle differences. "Blue moon" here means the month’s second full moon and "micromoon" means the moon is near its farthest orbital point; the moon will not actually appear blue. The uncommon overlap of a blue moon and micromoon makes this a notable sight for photographers, cultural observances and astrological readings this weekend.
