Hassett: 'We talk to CEOs of the credit card companies... there's not any threat to them'

financeMay 31, 2026203,637

Kevin Hassett, former White House economic advisor, told Fox News that credit card company CEOs face "not any threat" even as consumers lean on cards to cover essentials. He made the remark while discussing reporting that Americans are increasingly relying on credit cards for groceries, utilities, and other basic expenses. Hassett added "People are taking a bit longer" to pay balances, framing the trend as a temporary shift rather than a threat to card issuers' finances. The comment matters because it highlights a gap between focus on corporate stability and the mounting financial strain on average American households.

BREAM: The Journal says percentage of delinquent credit card balances is 13%, the highest in 15 years. People are using them for necessities. Your message to them? HASSETT: We talk to CEOs of the credit card companies all the time, and there's not any threat to them. People are taking a bit longer.

“We talk to the CEOs of the credit card companies” is the antithesis of a flex.

Barney Panofsky's Best Intentions614

Local man says credit card companies allowing people to go bankrupt at a very manageable pace.

Керрі Світ🇺🇦🇨🇦🇩🇰🇪🇺112

Why the hell would I care if CEOs of the credit card companies are worried about delinquent credit card balances? Just like the banks "too big to fail" in the 2007-2008 recession, they'll make out like bandits while ordinary Americans lose their jobs and their homes.

Your Canadian Girlfriend97

he immediately identified the "them" that are suffering as the CEOs of credit card companies. strong Let them eat cake energy.

Zen Zinnia59

He thinks we're concerned about the CEOs of the credit card companies?!?

Arthur Tiersky51

“People are stealing rope from Home Depot so they can hang themselves because they’re so much in debt.” “Yes, the President and I share your concerns for Home Depot…”

Diogenes Dog36

Does he ever stop smiling like a little fucking creep all the time?

Rubberband Girl32

Well, as long as the credit card CEOs are okay. 🙄

Expatriot24

Well thank god the CEO of VISA isn't unduly concerned about me maxing out my cards buying bread.

Mind Unguent24

The CEO's are fine, everybody. Nothing to worry about.

gramadre62.bsky.social20

Not one of them have to worry about putting necessities on a credit card. They DON'T live in the same world as us. 🙄

Resistateveryturn19

Lmfao talking to the ceo's as if they are the ones going into debt.

engsetterlvr.bsky.social18

The most punchable face ever.

Happening Again16

She was asking about the people, not the CEOs. But his answer tells you everything.

Flux 🤍🩶💜🖤16

So the policies may change when there are threats to the CEOs? (...am I reading this right?)

Bixlee, Your New Online Assistant15

whew at least the ceos aren't threatened

hikercat.bsky.social14

Hassett: "We talk to CEOs of credit card companies all the time" and there's "no threat to them [CEO salaries]" Hey Hassett, way to show who the republicans are really concerned about=CEO salaries not decreasing and only increasing

Blake105 🇨🇦🇫🇮🇺🇦 🇲🇽14

This idiot didn’t dodge. He really thought she was asking about the CEOs.

Rick Alexander ⚖️ ☮️ 🔭🇺🇦🇨🇦11

Whew! “No threat to credit card companies” … I was worried about those huge conglomerates that are raking in bigly profits from those double digit interest rates.

leemarvinoswald.bsky.social11

"And don't you worry about reports of people unable to pay rent. We talk to landlords all the time, and there's not any threat to them..."

TheCatMan11

Whenever seeing this constantly grinning bobblehead saying anything, am reminded of this scene from the film, 'Being There'

JoRichardsKent11

“There’s not any kind of threat to the credit card companies”. Well, gosh, what a relief! Stand down, everyone! Panic over! #NotAFekinClue! #CostOfLiving #OilPrices #Hassett bsky.app/profile/atru...

kath-55-1.bsky.social9

Well as long as the ceo’s are fine, whew!🤬🤬🤬

Benji Krause ✊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️📷🪐🐕🐈‍⬛🖖9

"We talk to the CEOs of the credit card companies all the time, and they don't feel threatened at all..." *sending up Luigi signal*

Marilyn9

Naturally the biggest concern is for the credit card companies

Forever Young and in Denial9

Whew! I’ve been so worried about the credit card companies.

Eric8

Thank goodness we have someone looking out for the credit card companies’ bottom lines…

Beachjon8

Government of the oligarchs, by the oligarchs, for the oligarchs.

Shiro8

"People are using credit cards to pay for neccessities to survive" "its ok we talk to ceos and theres no threat" ????????

Stunty9998

he is absolutly begging to be slapped across the face with a rusty shovel

Blackcatcrosses8

Holy shit, Hassett is astonishingly stupid and tone-deaf, even for THIS administration. And that's saying something.

Attractive Nuisance8

In a breathtaking moment of accidental honesty, Hassett misunderstands the question “what does delinquency mean for Americans suffering from increased costs?” He reframes the question because he’s not capable of acknowledging that we exist - only corporations matter. Can’t wait for the Dem ads.

JelliDonut 🇺🇦8

Another tone deaf elitist MAGAt who’s fine with throwing consumers under the bus.

Smith’s Hand8

Jesus. He thought the question was concern for the companies.

Mr. International7

So, have you talked to any regular people? You're afraid too!!!

Kurt Weldon7

I've never been much of a poker player, but this feels like kind of a tell.

Heidi Finan7

So busy twisting CEO arms for bribes they neither know nor care what’s happening to actual ppl.

Thomm537

He's an idiot. Or he thinks WE are.

nycgeo7

“There’s no threat to [the credit card compaies]”. Ummm, she asked you about US, not THEM.

glen6

“The people are suffering!” “You’re right! Corporate profits are booming!”

Bearcats Grad6

Got it. So he’s only worried about the credit card company profits.

Oscar Acosta6

Republicans have to be the most transparent and honest politicians ever. They so obviously only give a fuck about rich people and want everyone to know it. Because they also know that as long as they deliver a constant stream of hate, racism, misogyny and culture wars, they will keep winning.

Bark Marrington6

Not a problem at all. The credit card companies make even more money when people are behind on their payments with late fees and penalties. It’s a profit bonanza… for the credit card companies.

engsetterlvr.bsky.social6

So he’s not worried about the consumers. But the banks. JFC……

anotherday24.bsky.social6

Those credit card companies are making a new kind of killing off of the “people are taking a bit longer.” It hasn’t come full circle yet but people & their “credit” are going to sink.

rickdrake07.bsky.social6

This administration is out of touch with the economy. They think the stock market valuations are an accurate reflection of the economy. The two aren't directly correlated. The CAPE ratio for stocks is very over valued. This economy is a bug in search of a windshield.

Blackcatcrosses6

He might just as well have come right out with 'Let them eat cake!'

forced2bnice2u.bsky.social6

People are taking longer and taking hits to their credit score! Why doesn’t he get this? Taking longer only hurts NOT help people who are struggling financially due to this administration! 🤬🤬🤬

Brantlee Eisenman6

A bit longer to what? Go in to bankruptcy?

RckyMtnMn5

Q: What is your message to Americans having a hard time economically? A: There's no threat to the credit card companies Thank goodness the credit card companies are safe! I was worried they wouldn't be able to afford to eat next month! As for Americans having difficulty, let them eat cake!

Sierra Skier5

I once worked for BofA as a senior manager in their home equity/HELOC division. People "taking longer to pay" is a big concern, as it often leads to defaults. Which any person of normal intelligence knows, of course. 🙄

This We Will Defend5

McSmirkey: My message to the American people? We talk to bank CEOs. There is no threat to them. My answer could not be clearer: We don’t care about the finances of average Americans. 🛑

therealmaxwyman.bsky.social5

Why do they still allow this guy on TV? It's one thing to be a combative asshole like the rest of this administration, but this guy is just a smiling idiot who tells you not to believe your eyes or the polling or the financial reporting and keeps predicting 6% growth. Who is this for?

azprogressive.bsky.social5

"We're more concerned about the financial health of corporations than we are about our citizens." This administration has always been for the billionaires. Now they're feeling empowered enough to say it out loud.

Paul Rabin4

Of course his only concern is that of the welfare of the credit card ceos. Regular people however…

right2bhostile.bsky.social4

These people keep telling everyone who they are and what their priorities are. Yet red state people keep voting for them

Cwnidog4

Nice to hear there's no threat to the banks. How about to the people, asshole?

mariafartaroma.bsky.social4

Well, as long as there is no threat to the credit card companies I guess it's okay. 👍

U Don't No Me4

And after decades of an 18% usary limits, it's anything goes now. The 'standard' rate is now 35%! Insanity!

J H4

FFS if people are using credit cards to buy everyday essentials, that is a major problem!

Damaged Goods.4

You smug, tin-eared fucking simpleton.

Will Neuhauser 🗽⚖️🇺🇸🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽🇬🇱4

ah, the credit card company ceos are doing just fine. 😅

BanmarNJ4

I worked at Amex during the 2008 bust; individuals and companies going delinquent on their bills took them into bankruptcy, requiring a federal bailout

marysch77.bsky.social4

I’ll take “what is tone deaf “ for $200, Ken.

Mark Streich 4

Republicans, PLEASE send this guy out on the election trail. Love, the Democrats

Dr. Penguin4

That answer is dumb as hell but expected.

EricaJones4

Pretty sure no one is worried about a threat to credit card companies. Once people start raking up late fees and in in over their heads there’s no way out. Credit card companies love this.

Bill Walsh4

Just happy there’s someone out there looking out for the CEOs.

High Sierra4

Funny (not) now he interprets "Your message to them?" ... "them" being executives at credit card companies not the actual citizens being impacted. We know exactly where this admin's loyalty lies.

itbeatstwitter.bsky.social4

The Baghdad Bob vibes from this administration’s bobbleheaded sycophants are just getting worse by the day

onids.bsky.social4

As long as the CEOs are okay!

babyktchr3

This guys face make my blood boil

Keith Palau3

Not any threat to *them*; got it

Dave N.3

Remember when Yam Tits proclaimed all credit card companies were to lower interest rates to 10% and if they didn’t it would be a crime?

RiverCate 👁️ ❤️ 🇨🇦3

Ah yes, credit card companies are okay with people taking more time to pay their bills. Makes sense! $$$+++ These fuckers think people are really stupid.

timelady123456783

Well, as long as the CEOs are doing fine, it’ll be alright. 🙄🙄🙄

jmichalicek.bsky.social3

Cool. People who could never earn another penny and still live the rest of their lives in more luxury than most of us can imagine don't feel threatened by people going broke while not paying back their debt. This isn't really a surprise. I worked for Capital One and never will again.

bboopcanada.bsky.social3

Is he really as stupid as he seemingly is?

Suzen3

BREAM: An out- of- control driver just ran down a huge group of people! HASSETT: Yeah but we talked to the driver and there’s very little damage to his car, so it’s all good.

Kathy Byrne3

so the loan sharks charging 23-33% aren’t all that bothered and there will be no discussion on why people are risking financial ruin to survive

HongKongDongSong3

In Canada, the 90 day delinquency rate on non mortgage debt is 1.77% and has actually gone down year over year among 18-25's. Instalment loans are highest and credit cards are 0.78% delinquent over 90 days.

Sandy3

IOW: Screw the worker, we're just glad the credit card corporations will be fine. It would be better if this admin talked to the average John & Mary Public "all the time" to check to see if they're fine

Organizing is Life3

Citizens are paying high interest rates to pay for groceries, which are also high. Unsustainable. “I spoke to bankruptcy lawyers and they’re doing land office business”

MB Sweetzer 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇲🇽 🇺🇦3

Wait. He thinks the relevant concern is for the CEOs of the CC companies?!?! "There's no threat to them..." they're raking in interest and late fees!

cabanaboy.bsky.social3

Yes you do 2 things Change the numbers And talk to the CEOs We know that You don’t talk to the public users You talk to the CEOs about how to best support the millionaires Thanks for confirming

StrayKatAZ3

How do such clueless people exist, let alone survive in society??

Joshua Sharp3

Wow. Good thing for him no one watches these shows any more.

Fuzzy Soft3

Don't lower prices, just give people a longer period of time to pay on outrageously priced goods. #thinkinglikeabillionaire

Naguale2

The exact kind of grifting toady that Tar and Feathering is meant for.

I Love This Post2

So this idiot is worried about the billion dollar corporation but not the American people…and now he admits it

asamattoon.bsky.social2

Wow! It's one of those Marie Antoinette moments.

Kim2

Hassett is a smug, sled important ass

John W2

Thank god that National Economic Council (NEC) director is concerned that the nasty loser common people could be a threat to the credit card company CEOs and is looking out for them. Fortunately for America people aren’t going bankrupt at a fast enough rate to affect Epstein Class profits.

jsbooth.bsky.social2

Hassett continues to be a dipshit.

Cristabel2

All the Dems need to do for ads is just string together clips of Trump and his minions saying gob-smackingly stupid things that show their utter disdain for regular folks.

Dale2

Is anyone more tone deaf than Hassett?

atombomb05.bsky.social2

This is exactly where the billionaire and corporate donors of the GOP want the average American to be ... in debt! And indebted American makes for a more docile and desperate worker.

Poorer Richard2

Now, wonder why that would be

Sil2

Keep it up Fox. Keep it up Hassett. This just encouraged another 100 or so viewers to either vote Democrat or stay home. We'll take the W.

good george2

“We talk to people all the time (as he brushes he teeth in the morning looking at a mirror). People say Trump is amazing. They’ve never seen an economy so hit before.”

James Mc2

"It's okay. Ruin your credit for groceries."

Watch capital one stock market surge Monday morning🫣

Dizzygirl2

In his world "them" only ever means the rich.

CrazySaguaro 🌵 🐻 ⬇️2

Awesome that the cc companies are doing OK! /s

skontheisland.bsky.social2

Glad the credit card companies aren’t worried. They’re sitting pretty with the sky high interest rates they charge in normal times. Struggling folks must be paying late because they’re so excited about the boom that’s “about to come.” Get real. Get gone, Hassett, along with your co-shysters.

MTfromCC2

That’s who he cares about. Not the people drowning in an ocean of high interest debt. The credit card companies.

Phartnick2

Ffs we're not worried about the credit card companies. We're worried about working people going bust.

Matthew Conroy2

Would love to punch this guy’s lights out

ramannanda.bsky.social2

After 90 days of delinquency, late payment charges, and usurious interest rates charged by credit card companies, people will surely pay.
