Scott Pelley accuses Bari Weiss of 'murdering' 60 Minutes

journalismJun 1, 202610221,421

In a closed-door CBS meeting Monday morning, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley confronted new executive producer Nick Bilton and accused CBS editor Bari Weiss of "murdering 60 Minutes." Pelley pressed Bilton about recent firings, saying Weiss "does not love this place" and was "brought in to kill it," while Weiss deputy Charles Forelle called Pelley "rude." When Forelle called the exchange "not actually productive," Pelley replied "It's working for me" and invoked the term "Black Thursday." The confrontation spotlights internal conflict over editorial direction at 60 Minutes after recent staff cuts and raises questions about the program's future.

Oliver Darcy got the audio of the heated 60 Minutes meeting where Scott Pelley dressed Nick Bilton down! "You know what was rude? Black Thursday. That was the absolute definition of rudeness. Telling Tanya Simon she had to be out of here at five o'clock." www.status.news/p/scott-pell...

"Bari loves this institution," Bilton told staffers at one point during the highly contentious meeting. "She loves '60 Minutes.'"

"She's murdering '60 Minutes,'" Pelley countered. "She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it—and she's doing exactly that."

This story is based on audio of the meeting obtained by Status. A CBS News spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment, but Pelley's stunning series of remarks left staffers on the newsmagazine wondering if he will resign.

In the meeting, Pelley pointed out that Weiss has "no qualifications for her job" and told Bilton "you have slender qualifications for this job." Pelley, the former anchor of "CBS Evening News," noted that the changes Weiss has made to that program "have been catastrophic."

"So why should we expect any of this is going to be any better?" Pelley asked Bilton.

Bilton tried to move the meeting along, but Pelley pressed on, challenging the new executive producer’s references in interviews to “60 Minutes” creator Don Hewitt’s vision for the program as he outlined his plans.

"I have another question," the veteran journalist said. "Did you at any point work with Don Hewitt, telling everybody about what Don Hewitt thought, and what his inspiration was? I worked for Don Hewitt from 1999 to 2004 and Lesley Stahl probably worked with him for 30 years. Just wondering how you have such deep insight?"

Bilton replied that he was simply quoting Hewitt’s own words from past interviews and asked Pelley whether he had any other questions. Pelley said that he did.

"I have many questions," Pelley responded. "What was wrong with Sharyn Alfonsi?"

Really revealing how these creatures try to weaponize etiquette. Destroying people's livelihoods with abandon is fine and dandy, but how dare you be discourteous.

Andy Olsen666

"It's working for me", Pelley replied. 😄

seanmcdhorror.bsky.social328

This is what these people do, swagger around with no regard for anyone and if you don’t treat them with sufficient deference, you’re being “rude.”

El Sargento García230

Damn. Perhaps telling veteran journalists to shut up and not ask questions is not the best way to go. Rude. Snort!

eastwesthope.bsky.social183

TY for this post. I've always thought Scott Pelley had reams of integrity. He proved it again.

Samu157

oh no, not rudeness. Conservatives absolutely hate rudeness...when it's directed at them. they of course have free reign to be as cruel and petty to anyone they like, but the second you turn anywhere near that same vitriol on them, they become crusaders for decency and respectability. fuckin losers.

Scott FitzGerald89

Losers: "This is not actually productive; this is not an interview" Winners: "It's working for me"

L84

SCOTT PELLEY bringing it! CBS is just the worst. Hard to believe they did this to themselves. Hope Shari chokes on her sale

MarkH77

Scott Pelley is all of us right now. I only wish Weiss was there to be told to her face that she is an unqualified hack.

Blue in Red Oklahoma77

I grew up watching CBS News. Even as a kid, 60 Minutes was family viewing every Sunday night. What the new ownership has done to the crown jewel of broadcast news and investigative reporting is criminal.

reggie seidman75

Pelley calling Forelle a little bitch without even hinting at invective is art.

My god, Scott flipped both patties and pressed the spatula DOWN 😤

margo87.bsky.social56

Where is this kind of journalistic backbone when confronting the current administration, especially the criminal in chief?

Steve Okino54

I worked with Scott Pelley in another lifetime, almost forty years ago at WFAA-TV in Dallas. He was nothing but dogged and determined then, and he sure hasn't lost any steps in the many years since. 😹

Thurston Nuggs IV52

Huge respect for Pelley using his authority to push back against these clowns and twits.

carrots/sticks51

"Rude" – ah yes, the word universally used to silence and attack the watchdogs and any truth-telling.

nanw48

BRAVO Scott Pelley! THIS is how our MSM should behave …asking questions, pressing for answers, confronting the continual lies and BS. The corporate overlords need to be neutered.

Dock Ellis43

Pelley sounds kinda civil, like he knew it was being recorded and would eventually be released.

Tony Alfieri43

My first thought when I read this was of how genuinely moved Pelley seemed over Santiago Campos' scholarship acceptance speech at the annual News Emmy Awards.

It’s working for me is king shit

Good to see Scott Pelley making his final month at CBS News really count for something.

Doc00024

"It's working for me" will live in my head forever.

Geoff A.24

Seems notable that Pelley is speaking up on behalf of talented women who were expelled, and also that the new management is purging so many of the prominent women working behind the scenes.

Timani Tunduwani23

There are some sick burns in this one 🔥🔥🔥 In the meeting, Pelley pointed out that Weiss has "no qualifications for her job" and told Bilton "you have slender qualifications for this job." I have never heard of qualifications being called *slender* but here we are 😁

Go Scott Pelley! Can we get him in the White House correspondents crew to push back on Trump when he tells women they’re rude, low IQ, and “quiet piggy”?

Eileen O’Farrell @ofarrelltalent.bsky.social14

I don't think its possible for me to respect & adore Scott Pelley more than I do at this moment.

scout0914.bsky.social14

Good on Scott Pelley! And from everything I’ve seen of Scott Pelley through the years, he’s quite a gentleman and they all deserve the scolding they are getting from him! About time someone is standing up for REAL journalists …

Russ DiBello14

This Charles Forelle (WSJ refugee and lieutenant of Bari Weiss) had balls of brass to tell Scott Pelley that he was being "rude". Unfortunately he no longer has those balls because Scott Pelley just kicked them into oblivion in front of the whole company. How much bad press can these morons take?

ABOLISH ICE NOW!10

SCOTT PELLEY FOR PRESIDENT!!! This is the kind of take down the whole nation needs to SEE. The corporate media makes sure we DON'T see ppl standing toe to toe with the oppressors... giving the feeling everything is OK. What a hero.

Pruit Igoe9

Siri, show me an example of someone with no fucks left to give…

Cyn9

Bravo Pelley. Imagine all across the country, this kind of push back in all the sectors!!

Gene Rowzee8

Very impressed by Scott Pelley’s handling of these maga CBS execs. Also — this is how workers in a free society should be empowered to interact with their employers. There should be a nationwide workers’ rights statute that protects everyone’s ability to exercise the same privileges as Pelley.

Tom (kid codger) O'Neill8

I stick by my analogy: Weiss is like the decent sports car driver who is handed the keys to a semi and, with no training, tasked with driving the semi from New York to California.

st51.bsky.social8

I've avoided CBS since Scott Pelley lost his evening news job. Uncle Walter is spinning.

James Baum7

Based on the firing of Stephen Colbert, snd last night’s disaster with the 60 minute cast, it appears that we all will have more time to watch other networks and not miss anything on CBS!

connor-macleod.bsky.social7

Bilton is yet another British twat contributing to the ruin of American journalism, in the same tradition as Will Lewis at the Washington Post.

wahube.bsky.social5

Scott Pelly gaining a lot more respect - if that’s even possible - for humiliating Nick Bilton and Bari Weiss in person. C BS News has become a joke under Weiss. Serious journalists like Pelly deserve to work for respectable stewards of 60 Minutes.

SwiftFischer5

Fucking heroic dressing down. Fuck these people. Fuck Bari Weiss in particular.

Wil Weston5

Good for Pelley! Too many cowardly administrative dipshits who know fuck all, and enjoy sniffing each other’s farts — don’t get their feet held to the fire often enough and illustratively told how useless and stupid they really, really are.

From Weiss to Bilton; all are puppets of Trump and part of his destruction of free speech. Scott Pelley’s indignation was warranted and much courageous. How dare these unqualified people treat these remaining veteran journalists with so little respect. I appreciate/stand with Scott Pelley.

Brian Watkins2

"And enjoy the bagels". That is the perfect end to a meeting by a moron who has no clue. I know you hate me, but hey, I brought bagels - or my assistant did - I don't have to pay for those, do I?

Rob Pollard2

Everything Pelley said was accurate (and not rude) except that 60 Minutes is "our" (meaning the reporters') house. It isn't. He helped build & maintain it, but he doesn't own it. Pelley, Stahl, Alfonsi, etc should have left 6+ months ago and started their own house. 60 MInutes' is in foreclosure.

Let’s Be Frank32

Good for Pelley. There isn’t nearly enough of this degree of pushback among public people who have voices. Look at corporate America. I’m struggling to think of one head of a major business enterprise who has pushed back against this tyrannical fascist regime. Profits over people. The American way.

Kitty Murphy23

I think he stated the obvious - everyone can see the real reason she was brought in.

Fear None18

She may get transferred to CNN to do same, once she's done wrecking CBS and the Paramount merged is completed.

It’s a mirror image of what Trump and his fascist regime are doing to this country. Despite trump’s lies to the contrary he does not love it, he’s trying to kill it!!

I love that guy and am so glad to see him taking a principled stance. He knows he's going to be phased out or just let go.

Perhaps Scott Pelley should go on a media tour.

JanemNow9

So will Scott Pelley stay or go? I’m hoping the 60 Minutes correspondents whom Bari Weiss fired & any others who have left CBS will join up with other journalists (hello Jim Acosta) to create what 60 Mins could be if Weiss hadn’t murdered it.

Very impressed by Scott Pelley’s handling of these maga CBS execs. Also — this is how workers in a free society should be empowered to interact with their employers. There should be a nationwide workers’ rights statute that protects everyone’s ability to exercise the same privileges as Pelley.

Whistling Batter7

"I'm not intimidated by 10,000 MAGA tourists"

empty seats can't melt supreme court justices7

marisa is it giving "let's do the fucking news" attitude when you hire a not woke probably leather jacket wearing executive who is a coward? my favorite thing is like this happens and then like 20 people leak it because they hate Bari and her team so much at this point just throw it on Insta live

What this guy said ⬇️

unawarewolf.bsky.social6

Blurting “I’m not intimidated” while bolting out the door is the defining being intimidated

Rim Brake Monkey6

"I'm not intimidated by you" You sure? www.huffpost.com/entry/scott-...

Now what?5

I love it. Apparently he is intimidated. 🤷🏻‍♀️

God Emperor Doom5

And tell them I’m not mad. I’m not mad!

lithobolos5

Here for this. I have to let petty stuff fuel me.

Drive The Car Like We Stole It4

CBS really is about to just burn their own house down.

Kettlebelly4

Always run away after telling someone you're not intimidated.

Ike553

Wonder if he's intimidated by all the former loyal CBS watchers canceling their Paramount Plus subscriptions right about now?

Mikusa3

Did he go to the restroom then?

adriennearche11.bsky.social3

I'm not intimidated but I'm leaving because I'm very strong and want you to enjoy bagels, strong wonderful bagels. But not intimidated.

motyaf.bsky.social2

Ahh, Oh yes he is intimidated. Peed pants intimidated. Bilton is out of his league.

CanerdianGirl2

It’s rare to see someone give themselves a vaudeville hook, but Bilton just did it.

reggiewallinsky.bsky.social2

Don’t forget the kicker, the Post story said the room erupted in applause after Bilton fled.

ScottPelley, SharynAlfonsi, TanyaSimon, Cecilia Vega, Draggan Mihailovich: will make a new news team on a new, other DECENT TV NETWORK. #60minutes

emblcgb.bsky.social2

“I’m not intimidated by you” as he scurry’s out of the room. Ok, sure buddy.

Blake Brown2

Lol so pathetic. Scott was telling him he was dogshit, not trying to threaten him

StarlitTexan2

I felt the sting and the comment wasn't even directed at me. 😂

BigKungFu2

Narrator's Voice: He was, in fact, very intimidated by Scott Pelley by showing and telling him.

Swag Money 4202

So Bilton fled in terror

NotafanofFacism2

Republicans have ridiculously fragile egos.

West Coast Way2

“I’m not intimidated by you” [then quickly scurries away after being verbally beaten to a pulp].

It takes strength to look the person who could fire you in the eye and tell them that both they and their boss are giant pieces of trash. You usually don't win, but you definitely leave a mark, and you write your place in history. That's what Scott Pelley did today.

I got hired at a job because I told the prospective employer I was no longer interested when they tried to change my interview date. I said if you don't respect my time now, you won't then. Hiring manager called me back 10 mins later and said "you got moxie" like an old timey TV character.

Ah Sierra18

LOVE and total respect for Scott Pelley. An American Hero of 2026. They are few and far between.

Baron Von Trapp Star13

What's amazing about Weiss torching 60 Minutes to appease her masters, Trump and Ellison, is the immediate tactic a PR team can use if a segment features their company: "60 Minutes' ownership and editorial control are confirmed and documented as purely political. No one should take it seriously."

Sunny "Burl" Daze8

We need more journalists - and, well, Americans in general - to speak up like this in the name of ethics and integrity. All respect to and admiration for Mr. Pelley.

hillary lewis4

I love this so much. Not just for journalism but also it exemplifies how disgusting corporate groupthink is in general. It's a bunch of dweebs who usually get the top jobs now instead of smart people with integrity.

wndl "Dumocrat" bl3

His pension is fully vested

Gipper’s Gravespin3

And you feel good about yourself afterwards, regardless of the cost Usually better opportunities await anyway

ThereWillBeSwearing!2

He’s the best. I recall his 🔥grad speech from last year torching the admin. The truth STILL matters!

Rural Anarchy 2

He's a legend in the industry, probably close to 70 years old and able to retire very comfortably. A perfect position to be in to tell them what he really thinks and dare them to fire him. He can leave that mark on them in a way his junior colleagues might not be able to risk. Good for him.

ad85.bsky.social2

That it’s Scott Pelley, the most genteel persona on CBS is chef’s kiss.

The Real Steve Jessup2

Hey boss you can fire me but is doesn't change the fact that you screwed everyone just because you enjoy it.

David Roberts
@volts.wtf

Scott Pelley is a hero, and it really makes you wonder: where has this spirit been? In other media figures, other executives, other people who have seen these oligarchs degrade everything of value in this country? Why is it so striking & unusual for *anyone to fight back*?

Tony Alfieri8

I'dd really like someone to ask him if the breaking point was listening to Santiago Campus take CBS to task in accepting his scholarship at the Emmy Awards. Pelley seemed genuinely shaken watching this young man risk his career at its outset to stand up for the core principles of the profession.

sundiego2015.bsky.social3

I think what he is doing is brilliant. He is daring them to fire him. If they get rid of him and Lesley Stahl will leave soon, viewers will watch the new show and be like, "Who are these lickspittles and losers?"

C.P.K. Fagan2

Worth noting that Pelley is 68 years old, and has decades of on-camera exposure--if he's fired, he retires with the options of taking some emeritus-type positions and lucrative paid speaking gigs. Not everyone is in that type of position.

mashedtomatoes.bsky.social2

ESPECIALLY when they have the most money, resources, and power to be most effective at pushing back. If I'm someone with millions in the bank, never having to work another day in my life, I'm absolutely speaking up like Pelley did. The fact that more high profile millionaires don't is damning.

Nick Wagers2

I think Rutger Bregman summed it up pretty nicely when talking to Tucker Carlson: "You are a millionaire funded by billionaires. That's what you are." It explains a huge part of the acquiescence we see from journalists and tv personalities.

shep2

Always been shocked by the deafening silence which greeted book-banning. Fucking book-banning.

Many of them want to continue paying their mortgages and, if possible, send their kids to Harvard.
