Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian author and illustrator of the graphic memoir Persepolis, died at 56, and her family said she "died of sadness" a little over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa. Satrapi published Persepolis in four volumes and adapted it into an acclaimed animated film, establishing her as a major voice on Iran, exile, and women's lives. Her husband, Swedish producer and actor Mattias Ripa, died on April 8, 2025, and Satrapi's family linked her death to that loss; her passing closes a career that reshaped graphic storytelling and brought Iranian perspectives to global audiences.
