Marjane Satrapi, author of 'Persepolis,' dies at 56
Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian author and filmmaker best known for the graphic memoir Persepolis, died at 56, and her family said she "died of sadness" a little over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa. Persepolis chronicled her childhood in Tehran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution, became a bestselling, award-winning graphic novel, and she adapted it into an animated film she co-directed that received an Academy Award nomination. Satrapi's frank, autobiographical storytelling helped mainstream graphic novels in schools and literature and brought Iranian women's experiences to global audiences, reshaping how comics are used for serious memoir and history.
Sad to hear Marjane Satrapi, author of this extraordinary memoir, has died
Oh no, I loved that memoir. It was ground-breaking.
Oh no...I got to know her a bit working on her movie The Voices; she was one of a kind, a very impressive person
Oh no. She was far too young to die.
Oh no! What sad news. She was so influential and made a difference to my understanding of the issues in her home country.
Oh - that is sad. Her memoir touched me and taught me. A beautiful person taken from us way too soon.
What a shame - loved her work so much
Oh, that’s a shame. Marvellous book.
It's being said that she died of grief after the death of her husband a year ago.
So sad to hear this terrible news.
Oh that is sad. Such an amazing book.
People who have spent much time shop-talking about comics with me know I have a perennial gripe that not enough people in comics are trying to make an Opus. Too much trying to amuse the public or engaging current trends. My example of Who To Be was typically Marjane Satrapi. What a loss.
The only other people I would cite in this vein had names like Art Spiegelman, Alan Moore, Daniel Clowes, Riad Sattouf, Shigeru Mizuki. The kind of people whose book you could throw like a brick at people who said comics can't be great art.
She apparently died of sadness just one year after her husband died. A loss that’s impossible to fathom. Persépolis is sitting next to Maus in my bookcase. One of those essential books you just need to read.
The only thing that gives comfort to the news is she did manage to complete her Opus. She left a legacy that will last far longer than her. I just hope one day Iran will be free and her work becomes a warning from history as opposed to a cry for understanding.
Yes. I'm waking up in depression this morning. She had plans to live till 82 years fulfilling many projects. But the loss of her companion + the fate of the Iranian people, I guess that was too much to bear. I'm crying now. What a terrible loss for humanity in these dark times.
Heartbroken to read this. Marjane & her voice will be deeply missed 💔 www.france24.com/en/culture/2...
The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same. - Marjane Satrapi
This is so sad and unexpected
