Trump uses wartime powers to back $700M coal push

newsJun 4, 202618176

President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to allocate $700 million for coal power plant projects in Alaska and West Virginia, announcing the move from the Oval Office. He called the investment support for "clean, beautiful coal" and said the funds will build or refurbish coal-fired power infrastructure. The decision redirects wartime production authority to bolster coal at a time when utilities and states are shifting to renewables and raises climate and public health concerns because coal is the most carbon-dense fossil fuel and emits toxic air pollutants.
