The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported nonfarm payrolls increased by 172,000 in May, well above the 80,000 economists had expected. March and April payrolls were revised higher, lifting the three-month average to 188,000. The unemployment rate held at 4.3 percent while labor force participation remained 61.8 percent and average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent for the month and 3.4 percent year over year. Stronger-than-expected hiring alongside steady unemployment signals labor-market resilience and may sustain upward pressure on interest rates.
