Chicago Bears advance plan for stadium in Hammond, Indiana
The Chicago Bears' board voted to advance plans for a new stadium and development project in Hammond, Indiana, formally moving the proposal across the Illinois-Indiana border. The board's vote is the franchise's first formal step toward Hammond and sends the plan into further development work, but it does not finalize construction, funding, or a team relocation. Indiana officials have framed the move as an economic opportunity, and the proposal puts new pressure on the future of the Bears' Arlington Heights property and on local tax, job, and transportation plans in the Chicago metro area.
I’m not a football person but I am a taxpayer who is tired of being taken advantage of by sports teams. Fuck the Bears. Let them become the Hammond, Indiana Bears. The City of Chicago should sue them if they call themselves the Chicago Bears, and no Chicagoan should ever go to a game again.
Also, every last member of Friends of the Parks, the organization that so vehemently opposed a museum dedicated to the art of storytelling that focuses on marginalized voices because they wanted the Bears to have a parking lot instead, should be shunned for eternity.
In general, I am against taxpayer money for stadiums. Its a losing proposition for the people of the city, as there is less money available for other taxpayer services.
McCaskey family has been playing a game this whole time, holding the city and state hostage. But Pritzker called their bluff and your children and grandchildren will thank him. Thx JB!!
Sadly, as long as fans pay the exorbitant prices to attend games, it will never change. The cities steal from the poor to give to the wealthy. Yes, the stadiums provide jobs. But imagine how much money would go back to cities if owners didn't exist. (Green Bay!)
An organization reportedly worth $10B asking for public aid is not going to get much sympathy from Illinois tax payers these days...or ever.
The Packers model is looking better and better eh?
So which NFL franchise wants to relocate to Chicago? I had no problem shifting my loyalties from the Chicago Cardinals to the Bears, so I can do that again. I'll cheer for the Bears until that happens, but as of today, no more Bears merchandise for me.
The owners pocket millions billions the taxpayers get stuck with TAXES and tickets too expensive to enjoy a game.
The cities themselves should OWN these teams. If we are putting up the money for their stadiums and paying for the cops to direct traffic and the repair crews to fix the roads due to heavy traffic going to games, then the citizens should reap any benefits.
They still haven’t paid their share for the last stadium. If billionaires want money in kind, then make us silent owners.
I agree! But not just the Bears. Everyone sports organization that wants tax dollars to build a stadium Then charge us an arm and a leg to get in. I also say go where ever you want.
The working class citizens are tired of being treated like second class citizens. If they want a new stadium they can pay for it and not the taxpayers.
I am a football guy and I totally agree with this post.
A lot of people are going to blame the state for allowing the Chicago Bears to leave for Indiana, but I will not be one of them. The team mishandled the entire situation from the get go. They never produced the studies or reports that addressed the traffic concerns or the infrastructure they wanted.
If taxpayers build a stadium then they can charge franchise owners rent…
I support you! Frankly, I don't understand why so many people continue to pay the ridiculous ticket, parking and concession prices to watch these games. It's gotten so far out of hand, it's mind-boggling!
I’m a Bears fan and I agree 100%. Hoosier (“Who’s your”)Bears…
The ~Billionaire owners need to realize that access to the city’s people and infrastructure is a privilege. Sorry you couldn’t pressure us into a deal to subsidize your already profitable business. Go back to what you’re good at - generating CTE
exactly how I feel about the Chiefs. How f'n traitorous of the BILLIONAIRE Hunt family after all the support Kansas City has given them. Go ahead mother f'ers, cross the state line. Never support you again.
And take away "Bears," too. Let them be the Hammond Eggs.
I am a HUGE sports fan and am also tired of being taken advantage of by sports teams. The owners seem intent on testing just how outlandish their behavior can become before there is a revolt. Sports is becoming affordable only for those on the upper part of the K shaped economy. #taxtherich
Boston Patriots -> New England Patriots Chicago Bears -> Chicagoland Bears
LA did that for years. It refused to build a taxpayer funded football stadium.
I stopped patronizing the NFL after I read how awful they were treating the retired Black players. Not to mention Colin Kaepernick😡
Oakland CA has entered the chat...
The McCaskey family's been screwing Bears fans and Chicago since Papa Halas died. F 'em, let them go, we'll end up with something better. 😡
Boston was better after saying no to the Patriots stadium. I think Providence is still paying that 20+ years later.
Several teams have their stadiums somewhere other than the city they are named after. I don't care where the Bears play as long as my tax dollars are not funding a money making enterprise for billionaires.
I am a football fan. However, I agree that billionaire owners shouldn’t be able to extort money from the taxpayers for stadiums.
Raider fan here. Totally get where you're coming from. Such a slap in the face to the very loyal Chicago fan base.
Good luck filling the stadium. I don't think Bear fans want to pay the toll every Sunday. Indiana fans still have the Colts. Still think the Bears stay in Illinois. If not, I will be very disappointed and might have to root for another team. You don't screw over your fans like that.
From the Bears fans I work with I gather they hate the current stadium, Indiana stadium site, Arlington Heights stadium site and everyone involved with the Bears stadium, especially the Bears themselves.
Soldier Field is uniquely walkable for an American NFL stadium *and* insanely difficult to get to
We love Ben Johnson though
The current stadium is the least bad option imo
It’s great Chicago nuked their Olympic bid by fucking with Soldier Field for these assholes to be like a bloo a bloo
A true blue fan right there. No one hates a team more than its own fans.
I’ve been to dozens of games at Soldier Field and it’s actually the best. People complain about the walk but it’s a lovely part of the experience: walk through a great park with a ton of fans singing and talking, beautiful skyline and lake right there, transit to everywhere in the region nearby
chicago skyline the most unique madden curse victim ever
I wasn't sure whether this fall was going to be wall-to-wall Darren Bailey ads saying "Can you believe JB Pritzker let the Bears move to Indiana?!?" or "Can you believe JB Pritzker gave the Bears our tax dollars to stay in Illinois?!?" and now it seems like it'll be the former.
I just want lawmakers to pass a law saying you can't use a city's name for a team if they don't play any games there. Also looking at you, Niners.
I feel JB's savvy enough to come through this fine. His statement earlier hit the nail on the head by essentially calling out the team (Kevin Warren) for not negotiating in good faith. If anyone looks bad in this, it'll be the Bears' leadership.
Gonna be real embarrassing for my people when The Hammond Bears win a Superbowl before The Colts
We in Chicago do not need another stadium where the funding comes from taxpayers and the proceeds go mainly to billionaires. It is time that we stop taxpayer funded toys for billionaires. And northern Indiana could use some influx of development money.
Hammond. Have they seen Hammond?
Kevin Warren took the Big Ten to California and is close to taking the Chicago Bears to Indiana.
if i'm @mayorofchicago.bsky.social, i'm suing them to remove Chicago from the name. let them live with the marketing of being the hammond bears
They were shitty tenants and now will be shitty landowners bitching about taxes.
I thinks it’s wonderful that they are doing this solely for the benefit of the good people of Chicagoland. 💕
I've been a chicago bears fan for all my life by virtue of growing up in NWI. I DO NOT want them fuckers in NWI. is lake county footing the bill for this? how much school money is gary and hammond gonna lose because of it?
I would spend summers with my cousins in gary. we'd do whatever youth camp activity my aunt could get us into that fed us. Sometimes that meant going to the local elementary schools and I'll never forget when i went to the bathroom and walked in on a girl bc the stalls didn't have doors.
“Lead pipe removal? Sorry, we spent that money on gold-plated shoe warmers for the owners’ private suite.”
BREAKING: Chicago Bears say they will proceed with plans for a stadium in Hammond
I don’t follow football. But I do follow billionaires. And the comments on the Chicago Bears stadium story are telling you everything you need to know about where we are right now. “Billionaires suck.” “Billionaires aren’t scared enough.” Nobody’s talking about the stadium.
Looks like Green Bay is getting a bunch more fans
Brand new stadium. Record low attendance.
hey Chicago residents: if $$$ is all that the Bears organization cares about, let 'em go. better yet: consider rooting for the Packers, Lions, or Vikings - at least THEY care about their home cities and fans!
Oh well, guess that's the end of the Chicago Bears. "Hammond Bears" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Fuck that. Fuck the McCaskey family. Fuck that hilljack governor of Indiana.
Should absolutely have to forfeit the name Chicago if they do that.
Sweet, let's relocate the colts
The Haslams keep holding Cleveland hostage, too. Fuck these NFL owners. There’s far more to cities than their football teams that suck local resources without giving back. And don’t parrot that old saw about “indirect income” for the city. There’s far less destructive industries that do more.
Building a stadium in Indiana "will bring Chicagoland together and deliver new opportunities to its residents and businesses," the Chicago Bears announce.
They better remove "Chicago" from their name.
Warren is a liar. This is him trying to cover up his massive failure. It is not happening.
We're going to punch you in the face because we think the bruises will unify you and create new economic activity for you. Thanks for all the dollars and fans. We're leaving.
As with my Buffalo Bills and their new taxpayer funded stadium, the average-income Chicago Bears fan, will probably not be able to afford to attend a game.😞
